Yelp
Ok... Was looking for a place for the fam to eat since we're not in this area too often. Saw this place on Yelp and was craving some Hawaiian food.
Now, keep in mind, after seeing some reviews, I was expecting a Noelani's type vibe (San Carlos). Boy was we all wrong. We park and keep missing the front door. The sign to the place is real small - almost like a secret hidden spot. Walk in, and the ambiance is dark, and there is some funk/pop rock music playing in the background. This is weird I tell the mrs. So we grab some menus and sit towards the front, galley seating style.
Ordered furikake fries, fried rice, mochiko chicken, mac salad, and some fish sandos.
Fries-these were pretty good. You can taste the butter and olive oil and furikake thats doused in the fries. Might have been heavy handed on the sauce, but otherwise, these were good.
Fried rice-probably the best dish and most in line with "traditional" fried rice when you're talking Hawaiian food. Spam, onions, garlic, and some umami taste I can't figure out. Oh and a sunny side egg. Pretty decent, but again, heavy handed on the oil.
Mochiko chicken-was most excited for this one. But it's really a fusion dish. It's crispy boneless chicken, but waaaay too much sauce poured on it. The bottom was literally all yellowish sweet sauce. Dunno what it is, but this dish would have been awesome if not for the sauce.
Mac salad - was okay. Similar in flavor and texture to local style.
Fish - hard pass, no bueno.
They do a brisk take-out business, which is weird. And it looks like full plates with rice and ish.
TLDR - this place is bar first, then pupu style restaurant far second. Patrons younger and having a good time, but most were just drinking and picking on some fries. Don't expect any type of Hawaiian vibe at all.
