The Best Barbecue Restaurants Around New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"This New Orleans East barbecue outpost is well-known for providing its famous cochon de lait po’ boy at Jazz Fest, Satchmo Fest, and other high-profile local occasions (even its website URL puts the attention on the cochon de lait), but don’t overlook its pork and other barbecue favorites. Pitmaster Jonathan Walker calls it, “New Orleans-style, baby.”" - Stephanie Carter

New Orleans’s Best Po’ Boy Sandwiches | Eater New Orleans

"Don’t come looking for fried shrimp here at this New Orleans East po’ boy hotspot. At Walker’s, it’s all about barbecue: pork, brisket, and smoked chicken. The barbecue institution is also the brains behind one of Jazz Fest’s top-selling food items, the cochon de lait po’ boy. Topped with a sweet, spicy mustard slaw, it’s the gold standard. Note: Doors close when the meat is gone." - Eater Staff

The 12 Best Po' Boys in New Orleans

"The cochon de lait po’ boy that features at Walker's is always one of the first items to sell out at Jazz Fest, and with one bite you'll know why.  Filled with pork so succulent it disappears as soon as it hits your tongue, this po’ boy warrants regular pilgrimages from any BBQ aficionado worth their weight in smoked meat. While Walker's itself is a little bit of a drive outside of central NOLA, you won’t regret the brief road trip." - Andrew Parks

Google
2025 French Quarter Fest- My husband and I were very disappointed due to our 4- Cochon De Lait Po-Boys had only a slither of the cabbage & wertie sauce underneath, 4-6 strings of the cabbage when normally it’s a pile of it???? The cabbage sauce is what makes this sandwich UNIQUE. Now to lessen that ingredient, ruins the sandwich entirely. This company has always been an outstanding!! The BEST pulled pork in town!!! Please go back to how it’s always been done. My family and I love this sandwich. We do come out to support at every fest this company is part of. Hope to see y’all at the Jazzfest.

Google
I seriously don’t do much as far as reviews, however I just must now. We attended the FQ fest today and your poy boy is something we look forward to the most, and so we like to end with it. This year was probably the worst in a meal that I have ever had. The only thing that was consistent and tasted good was the bread… but the pork terrible, the coleslaw… there was none to speak of! The whole experience of us so looking forward to having your famous sandwich was just a big flat disappointment. :(

Google
Went to Walker's, for the first-time in a good-while, on Friday. The walk-up window and ordering-process are new to me, BUT, the ribs are still great and the potato-salad is incredible! Do yourself a favor and get the center-cut ribs! I will make a point to get out that way more often, at-least bi-weekly!

Google
Definitely some of the best BBQ in the region. But you have to catch them when they're open. It would be nice if they could expand their operations and stay open more consistently.

Google
I couldn’t locate love at first bite at Quarter fest so I went to Walkers to purchase a Cochon sandwich at 15.00 + tax. I’ve been getting this sandwich for years from love at first bite and it never disappoints. But on yesterday I wasn’t pleased at all with this sandwich from Walkers. The bread was hard & soggy. And they didn’t have anything to wrap your food in.

By far one of the best BBQ places we tried on our trip to the south of the US. We arrived almost at closing time (2pm) but they were very friendly and accommodating with our order, even though it was last min. The Cochin de lait (pork) poboy was excellent and the brisket burnt ends was probably the best we had in a long time! All was served promptly and there was some outdoor sitting to enjoy the food. They gave us some free samples of the smoked chicken salad as well, which was delicious. The staff was super nice and even recommended us some places to visit in New Orleans. Is everything you will expect from a southern bbq experience, great food and even better people.

Google
We stopped for lunch & ordered 2 Cochon de last (pork) poboy's with slaw & peach cobbler. The pork was moist, tender & tasty the slaw was a great balance with being a little sweet & definitely get it on the French roll. The peach cobbler was sweet & had plenty of flakey crust. Boy we lucked out they are only open until 3 pm or till they run out on Thursdays and Fridays & today is Thursday. We got there around 1:40 pm & they closed at 2:10 pm. So get there early. They were so friendly & helpful as we stumble through are order.

Google
Family owned small business. Very informal, order through window, pick up at door. Positives: Excellent Brisket and Smoked Chicken Wings; all I ever get lol! Good sides, great Vietnamese bread. Cons: Unpredictable hours, you can’t speak with anyone by phone, telephone recording is inaccurate concerning restaurant operations dates, days and times, and messages aren’t responded to. Overall, the food is Delicious, if you’re lucky enough to find them open.

Yelp
I've been trying to come here for years but because of the weird hours (Thurs-Fri 10:30am- 2pm) I never could make it. I finally caught them one Friday and boy was it worth the wait. The lady at the window was so nice, she took her time with me and answered all the questions I had. I got Ribs, Wings, a few sides collards & jambalaya, and the famous smoke chicken Salad everyone talks about. The ribs are the best ribs I've had so far in New Orleans they were sweet, salty and so tender. My first bite I took the meat LITERALLY almost dropped on the ground. The perfect bite! The Wings were awesome as well they had a nice spice to them I just wish they had just a little more salt. Now, all the great talk I heard about the Smoke Chicken Salad was no lie. It's hard to explain the amount of flavor it had man you just have to try it yourself. The sides were just ok nothing to write home about. If you can ever get there you gotta go but make sure you remember the times they're open.

Jaren E M.

Yelp
Price of food not worth it. Taste old. 7 pieces of fat burnt ends and scope of jambalaya for $28 and some change. Walkers need to close down robbing the community

Yelp
You're going to have to go to the east for this one, so make sure you gas your car up before taking a trip here. You still might get car jacked, but it's worth the risk. The BBQ here is one of the best in the city. The Chochon de lait is go-to for me when I touch down and visit the city. But you can't go wrong with anything from walkers, it's all good! Staff is friendly, and will have your food out pretty quickly. The store hours are kinda weird in my opinion so make sure you look/call ahead and make sure they are actually open before taking the risk to come there. I don't take pulled pork seriously from anywhere else because of this place.
google avatar

Helen H.

Yelp
My favorite bbq anywhere! It's the BEST but the hours are totally freaky so call ahead. Right now (12/2022) they are open m-f about 10:30- the meats run out. Call ahead to make sure they're open!

Janice R.

Yelp
The food is delicious. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You can sit on the inside where they have picnic style seating using tables and bench seating or on the outside. There is a hanging menu with all of the delicious food that they serve.
google avatar

Yelp
Without a doubt... One of the best, and my absolute favorite BBQ in New Orleans and God's planet Earth! I look forward to this spot every year! Center cut Spare Ribs, and these Smoked Wings tho!!!!!! Potato Salad and Mustard Greens are Off da Hook!!!! No sauces needed for nuthin! Came as a recommendation years back, from Anthony Bourdain himself! HellaBomb!!!!

Joe S.

Yelp
**The best BBQ ribs in Nola. Smoke favor. The only problem with the restaurant is that it's only open 3 days a week. The restaurant is closed at 2:pm. So place your order early. 4 stars.

Yelp
Best bbq I've had since moving here, absolutely love the ppl that work there they all are so nice and you get your food quickly

Yelp
Delicious cochon de lait poboy & wonderful potato salad. I'm a snob about potato salad & loved it. Call first before going because they often sell out. Every time I have gone service was great. There are picnic tables outside. I've only taken out, so I don't know if there's any seating inside.

Gloria C.

Yelp
I have been going to Walker's for years and they are the only BBQ that I eat. The pork is the best and the potato salad is better than mine.
google avatar

Marielle S.

Yelp
Take out only, and they have some outdoor seating, but unless you want to sit in the hot sun, your best bet is probably just taking it to go. On the day I was here, they had a boudin special, so that's what I got. I got it with a side of potato salad and mustard greens. The boudin was really good, although I think I would have enjoyed it more if it was a little spicier. I always like my boudin to be on the spicier side. The potato salad and mustard greens were perfect and balance out the sausage well. The process is pretty easy, you go to the window and order, and the food comes out pretty quickly. All of my food cost $11, so I'm not complaining. I will definitely be back; the food was great. I made a list of best hidden BBQ for Very Local New Orleans and this l restaurant was on it! Read it here: https://nola.verylocal.com/bbq-new-orleans/228292/

Yelp
To say this place is only open 3 days a week, and off the beaten path in the East, customer service one day was lacking. I called my order in, l and expected it to be ready by the time I drove to get it, but still had to wait 35 minutes before my ticket was called. Only 2 people were in front of me. Not the best way to spend a lunch break. If you want good barbecue, this is the place. You just have to make a day of it, and clear your schedule.

Yelp
This is a pick up to go type BBQ joint. They are attached to a seafood restaurant, Castnet Seafood, which I believe to actually be a better choice than the BBQ option here. The beef BBQ at Walker's doesn't seem to be an area where they shine to my taste preferences which I prefer the Texas Hill Country or Kansas City style. I was rather pleased when I saw they had burnt ends but sadly they ended up tasting far more like pot roast (instead of the excellent local example available at The Joint) and the beef is served with a Memphis style thick sweet molasses sauce (and Memphis has never been noted for their skills with beef BBQ unfortunately). The sides were a mixed experience as the cole slaw had nice spice kick to it while the potato salad was terrible to the point I couldn't even eat it. Overall for beef BBQ fans like myself this location just doesn't deliver and there are far better options for those of us that choose beef while for you pig and chicken fan folks you might find what you want here.
google avatar

Billie M.

Yelp
So YUMMY!!!!! I got the beef brisket and it literally just melted in my mouth. I really loved the cole slaw. It was so unique and I've never tasted anything like it.
google avatar

Stephen H.

Yelp
Got the brisket poboy and pork belly bites. Lip smacking good! The slaw on the poboy has a nice horseradish-like kick that compliments the beefiness of the brisket. Nice smoke flavor to the meat. Pork belly bites were decadent. Nice ratio of meat to fat. Super moist and tender and tossed in a deliciously sticky sauce. I'm getting hungry just writing this review.
google avatar

Ana C.

Yelp
Walker's Cochon de lait poboy is the best in the world!!! Had one at French Quarter festival 2023.
google avatar

Christopher W.

Yelp
Tried something new at Walkers and once again they proved why they are the best bbq joint in town. I ordered the cochon poboy when I noticed my friend ordered the burnt ends poboy, omg I am glad I switched. On came a huge poboy on Dong Phoung bread filled to the brim with big hunks of burnt end brisket that was perfect in flavor and taste. When I tell you this place is the best in town I mean it. It lunch service mostly since they normally sell out around 3pm. You won't believe how good the meat is here especially for the price.
google avatar

Ail H.

Yelp
Excellent smoked chicken salad, chicken, ribs, and brisket. If you're in town, this is the most dry place however, they're only open Wednesday through Friday from 11 to 2 PM. This is a walk up order place seating is very limited inside and out but I must try.

Fred R.

Yelp
I would love to be able to provide a fair rating, but I can't because during my visit they were closed. Yelp hours for this establish are false, they are actually open 3 days per week and close at 2pm. YOU MUST CALL THEM TO CONFIRM THEIR REAL HOURS. Also, they are about 20 minutes out of the French Quarter out of the area, so the drive will be an inconvenience if you arrive and they are closed. I would recommend that either Walker's or Yelp update Yelp's hours for them. : (

Maram L.

Yelp
The real standout for me was the brisket. It was so tender and flavorful that I couldn't stop eating it, even after I was full. It's definitely a must-try dish. I enjoyed sitting in the atmosphere of Walker's as well. It's a warm and welcoming place that I will be coming back for. Thankss.
google avatar

Cara M.

Yelp
This place is in the same building with Castnet seafood. The ribs will melt in your mouth, they are bursting with flavor. This is a family owned. Friendly service. You can eat in the restaurant or outside at the picnic benches. Don't forget to get their flavorful baked beans to go along with your ribs or chicken.
google avatar

Kurt L.

Yelp
Everything on the lunch specials were "ribs". Ribs, ribs and chicken, pretty much anything under the sun and ribs. So I got a brisket sandwich. It didn't afford me the chance to try the peach cobbler, but it did come with their sauce. When I went I. The waiting area they had an oyster bar and fresh oysters for $10/dozen So it was BBQ brisket and oysters on the 1/2 shell for lunch today. The best lunch I have had in a while...
google avatar

Latoya T.

Yelp
I got the burnt ends sandwich on a bun, dressed with coleslaw. That sandwich was soooo good! The meat was so tender and juicy that I didn't even need to use the bbq sauce that came with it. I can't wait to try it again.

Carly E.

Yelp
Ribs were incredible! First time trying them and I was not disappointed. Look forward to returning in the future

Henri C.

Yelp
These guys used to have the best cochon Delate sandwich in town along with killer chicken salad. I would cross town to go there without even thinking out it. I don't know what these kits are about but they are not a good idea. Another poboy place that has been around for years on Jeff Davis parkway is doing the same . Let me reiterate NOT A GOOD IDEA. !!!!!!!!!!!!! I know the pandemic is putting the hurt on places but in my opinion if you are not going to do it right don't do it at all.
google avatar

Allison E.

Yelp
If you're looking for great BBQ, make the time to get to Walker's. Their hours can be limited, but now they're open on Saturdays (!!) which makes getting your fix way easier. Don't stop with the Jazz Fest-famous cochon de lait... the smoked wings are incredible, the brisket is killer, and the ribs can convert even the tidiest of eaters to the dark side. My favorite is the chicken salad -- so good all you need is a fork.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
As good as it gets for sure! The portions are huge, the barbecue is one of the best I've tasted anywhere, and the price is insanely cheap (but I'm from Cali so maybe my perception of cheap is skewed) This place was packed when we came and now I understand why. The ribs were perfectly cooked (feel right off the bone). The bbq sauce had just the right sweetness.
google avatar

John J.

Yelp
Ate here for the first time today.... Didn't have much time but had the Burnt Ends on a bun and some baked beans. The sauce was awesome and the flavor of the meat was perfect....not too much not too little. I will be back.
google avatar

Christian M.

Yelp
One of the best BBQ joints in the south. Hands down best in Nola. Off the beatin path when it comes to New Orleans but it's well with the trip.

Clayton L.

Yelp
Impressive BBQ in New Orleans, think their meat is all smoked. Very taste, will revisit. It's right next to Castnet Seafood, they share a dinning room.
google avatar

Joni R.

Yelp
Well known for the bbq yes, but the smoky chicken salad is off the chain!!!! A bit pricey but delicious. Just the right blend of spices and the green onions make it. The best thing is that the amount of mayo is just right for those of us who like to actually taste the chicken and don't like our sandwiches swimming in mayo! My vote goes to Walkers for the best chicken in New Orleans. By the way, get a side of peach bread pudding. Awesome!
google avatar

J E L.

Yelp
The meat is incredibly tender, and the horseradish and slaw were also nice compliments. It was just as good without the BBQ sauce as with. The loaf was not typical New Orleans French bread, but it was still awesome. Its worth getting cash and making a drive.
google avatar

Qee B.

Yelp
Awesome place - love the ribs and coleslaw. The sauce is great on anything. I do hate festival season - you have to catch them while they're out at a fest But great barbecue spot!!!
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
Worst greens ever. Straight out of the can. No seasoning, no meat ... just sad and lazy.
google avatar

Kill P.

Yelp
Review based strictly on their delivery at Oak St PB fest this year but this was the best po-boy I ate all day after many, cochon de lait. Wonderful smoked pork shredded into a tasty french roll topped w house slaw and sauce, holy piglety goodness. I wish I could find this in my town.
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
This place has the best smoked chicken salad in the entire world. I'm not exaggerating. It will change your life.
google avatar

Sean R.

Yelp
It took a lot of deliberation to give this place 3 stars; leaning on the low side. The meat was cooked well, sauce was pretty good too, the atmosphere has all the romantic makings of a old-school pit, but thats not enough to make a BBQ joint worth going back to. Simply said the only reason why this place isn't worth the drive to is because its overpriced. $11 for 2 slices of brisket on a poboy? No thanks and never again. Even the Cochon de lait poboy was stuffed mostly with coleslaw rather than pork. I got really excited about the jerky too, seeing as how i havent had any good stuff since living north of the Mason Dixon line, but alas, my $5 paid bought only 3 slices. Count'em, only 3 pieces! Very dissapointed after high hopes...
google avatar

Remahn F.

Yelp
Great greens! A bit overpriced, but truly good food. The hours are weird. I've gone here several times when they should have been open and they were definitely closed. Other times I've gone, with my palette prepared for greens, or beans, and have been told the are completely out of some things on the menu. I took off a few stars for the inconsistency, but if the spot would be rated on the quality of the bar b q and other sides, etc, I would have given it 5 stars.
google avatar

Kodaq G.

Yelp
Stumbled on this delightful BBQ outpost only to discover I knew the owners and all from our many years of working Jazz fest. At least 3 persons called me by name but I digress. The 3 ribs with sides is awesome. I especially enjoyed the green beans...just like mom used to make...over cooked Southern style and delicious. And the meat virtually fell off the bones of the ribs. It is worth the drive for their fare.
google avatar

Cherie B.

Yelp
The BBQ is fantastic. We had the baby back ribs and chicken. Both were cooked to perfection. Each came off the bone. And w wee juicy. They had a smoke taste but not over whelming. Also loved their potato salad which is a light mayo based And greens cooked down with the smoked pork. Save room for the peach cobble just awesome. This place is a gem in New Orleans
google avatar

Marisol D.

Yelp
Really enjoyed their brisket po boy and potato salad and baked beans...good service. Definitely going back
google avatar

Abdul S.

Yelp
Never disappointed! The best ribs in New Orleans East! My family and I always stop by Walker's for some ribs. They have great sides to choose from such as beans, potato salad, and greens. Well done

Daniel D.

Yelp
First thing I want to say is that the food is great. When you find a BBQ joint that sells burnt ends as a plate, that speaks highly of the establishment too. What I can't stand is the odd hours the place has. It's like they make it extra hard in order to get some great BBQ in NOLA East. My other problem I have here is when I went last time, a large flying cockroach flew on me when I was at the counter, waiting for my food. It kind of traumatized me from coming back to Walkers. I grew up in the country around these bugs, just didn't expect one to land on me inside a restaurant.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
This place is among the best barbecue I've tasted in Louisiana. The meat was near perfectly cooked, the portions are huge, and the sauce is homemade and has an incredible flavor. I couldn't decide what to get, so I got the sampler, brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. I could hardly eat much after I got past the ribs. And they use good meat too, the ribs where nice and big and had just the right amount of fat. You could probably just order three and be plenty full. This place is famous for the cochon de lait po boy which they sell at Jazz Fest, apparently under the name "Love At First Bite". None of us ventured to try that, we all thought we would judge their traditional barbecue first. Now that they have passed that test I'll be surely to go back and give that a try. Especially since I don't see my self dishing out cash for a ticket to jazz fest. This place would run right up against Ms. Hysters in my mind if i liked there sides. Two of the sides are mayo based, I hate mayo. The other sides are baked beans and mustard greens. Both were not particularly spectacular. But perhaps the clientele likes it better than me. All I'm sayin is, where is the mac and cheese? This place is also situated in a great locale, across the street from the levee/lake ponchartrain, next to castnet seafood, and down the street from a snowball stand. Can't beat that. I cannot stress giving this place a try, just call ahead, it's open weird hours and is too far away to show up and not get anything.

Wrosa J.

Yelp
The best bbq in the city. The smoked wings, half chicken and ribs are my favorite but everything on the menu is delicious.
google avatar

Olivia C.

Yelp
We've had a lot of BBQ but this is the best! We stopped in while passing through town and now we crave it all the time! It was THE best BBQ we've ever found. If only New Orleans was a bit closer to us, we would eat there all the time. Just bring cash with you!!!
google avatar

Nyky L.

Yelp
First let me say this these people are never here, I have been here so many times in the past and there was a sign or not saying they were working at some type of festival. When they are there the food is outstanding. I had a poboy I think it was a couchon pork it was soooooooo good , lick your fingers drop the napkin good. It had some type of horseradish mayo I think it was soooo good, the meat was tender and flavorful, bread was fresh and flaky. It smelled so good I ate while driving something I never do, almost wrecked the car and bit my fingers when I first tasted it. Ordered some bbq brisket sausage and chicken melt in your mouth I tell you damn good bbq. They do this cup meal thing with bbq, potato salad, beans etc loaded in this little plastic cup for a low price which is ridiculous. I could eat 2 easy! Staff is always smiling really friendly very helpful although sometimes they make you feel a bit rushed to order when they're busy, I don't care tho will stand in line here with my face pressed against the glass waiting for them to return from the festival grounds. Food is that durn good !
google avatar

Ryan A.

Yelp
Awesome BBQ and Service. The young man that helped us Christian was courteous and guided us through all of the best things to order on the menu which really was everything on the menu. Ended up going with the 3 meat platter and was not disappointed got a taste of the Ribs, Brisket and Pulled pork soooooo good the sides were delicious as well. Will definitely be back next time I'm in town.
