The Best Restaurants in the Houston Suburbs Right Now | Eater Houston
"One of two Indonesian restaurants in the Houston area, Warung Indo has been a staple of Indonesians looking for a slice of home. Tucked into a strip mall, the restaurant serves some of Indonesia’s most popular dishes, including nasi campur, a rice dish made up of beef rendang, tempeh, chopped vegetables, and boiled egg, and nasi goreng, a national Indonesian fried egg-and-rice dish. Seeking some additional comfort? Try the soto ayam, a chicken soup hued by golden turmeric and simmered with a variety of spices, lemongrass, and makrut, plus flavorful additions, including cabbage, eggs, vermicelli noodles, tomato, and bean sprouts. Quench your thirst with es cendol, a traditional drink made with pandan-flavored rice flour-tapioca jelly, coconut milk, and palm sugar syrup." - Brittany Britto Garley

"I was thrilled to see nasi campur ($15) on the menu at this Sugar Land strip-mall gem; the dish featured a scoop of white rice surrounded by vegetables and protein, with tempeh flavored in a spiced bath of kecap manis (Indonesia’s sweet soy sauce) plated atop the rice alongside a marinated egg and rendang, a slow-cooked meat dish popular in Indonesia and Malaysia, while chopped peppers brightened a stellar interpretation of the Javanese mainstay—delivering both authentic taste and atmosphere." - Kayla Stewart
At Warung Indo, Indonesian Cuisine Is the Star of the Show | Eater Houston
When Ida and Robin Edwards opened Warung Indo in 2022 in a Sugar Land strip-mall, I saw it quickly become a hub for Indonesian families seeking traditional, familiar cuisine. Ida centers the flavors of her native Central Java while also preparing soups and stews from Sumatra and seafood from Gorontalo, insisting on ingredients like galangal, makrut lime, and fried shallots to showcase a centuries-old cuisine rather than a hybridized American interpretation. Nasi campur at the restaurant features white rice topped with a generous portion of beef rendang (a Sumatran beef stew), a saucy mix of tempeh and chopped vegetables, and a boiled egg marinated in a sambal of chili, onion, garlic, and spices, served alongside a piquant orange broth with carrots and chopped green beans. The nasi goreng is presented with anchovies and a quintessential fried egg—where the anchovies’ saltiness melts into the egg to produce a sharp, slightly acidic bite in fragrant fried rice. Her soto ayam follows the national style—golden with turmeric and infused with coriander, galangal, lemongrass, and makrut lime—simmered for three hours and finished with bean sprouts, tomato, thin cabbage slices, eggs, and vermicelli. For dessert and refreshment, es cendol features rice- and tapioca-based green jelly strips saturated in palm sugar syrup and pandan (the pandan provides the core vanilla-like sweetness, with green food coloring enhancing the brightness). A visually striking banana-leaf–wrapped dish showcases grilled rice and chicken seasoned with chili, jalapeño, red and green peppers, onion, garlic, galangal, ginger, and lemongrass, briefly microwaved so the banana leaf’s flavor seeps in before baking and serving—a true feast and visual delight. - Kayla Stewart
This is the most authentic Indonesian foods in Houston. Don't be confused with Malaysian or Thai food. They are similar but not the same.
Indonesian foods have very complex spices and takes time to cook.
A family run restaurant. The foods are delicious and taste authentic.
The service might be slow if they are busy. They only have 1 cook. But it is worth the wait.

Had an amazing lunch, food is excellent and authentic, felt like I was back in Indonesia. If you have not tried Indonesian food this is the place to go. Bakso, reminded me of street food in Jakarta, super good. My wife is from there and absolutely loved it. Will be a go to spot for us. Can't wait to return and try everything on the menu. Food is reasonably priced, we had several dishes and none disappointed.

My family came in for an early dinner yesterday and we had a lovely time speaking to the owner about how he came to open Warung Indo. The food was delicious and I loved hearing his Indonesian with a Southern drawl. I live about an hour north of this restaurant but I would say it's well worth the visit if you're looking for authentic food with generous portions!

Updates:
The last two times I come by there were little to no customers I wonder what happened? I really wanted to like this place but I got a food poisoning after having the Nasi Bakar Ayam :(
Original Post:
Nasi Goreng Teri (Anchovy Fried Rice) 5/5 This is so appetizing and comforting! Reminds me of home!!
Nasi Bakar Ayam 5/5 Amazing!! Will come back for this!!
Lontong Sayur 3/5 It would have been great if this was served hot. I usually appreciate a dish that’s cooked and served but I suspect this one has been made for a while.
Es Campur 3/5 Too much flavor going on for me.. not my kind of drinks.. the Es Cendol might have been a better choice..

Our go-to Indonesian restaurant in Houston.
We’ve been to many Indo restaurants across the US and this one is honestly in our Top-3.
Our favorites: Nasi Campur (photo), Mendoan, Pempek, and Nasi Ikan Goreng + Sambel Terasi.

I used to love Mama Yu's so I've had Indonesian food before. I wasn't impressed with this food. I really wanted to like it because I'm tired of Indian and Arab halal restaurants. But the food was salty and flavorless all at the same time. We had the vegetable fritter, gabo gabo and beef fried rice.

We were in town for Spring Break and wanted to try an Indonesian resto since Houston has a much larger Indo population than where we live. So there has to be a restaurant, right??!
Warung Indo was excellent! We tried to pick and order a variety of items, but were too stuffed from eating the food. We did take some food to-go. The owner was very nice and had gladly provided us plates for when we got back to the hotel. Highly recommend for authentic Indonesian cuisine!

Never ever disappointing!. They consistently serve the authentic food in the area. I llllooove every single plate I had. They are all amazing. I'll definitely be back if I'm in town. 5 stars!

Yelp
Warung Indo is THE place to go for authentic Indonesian food! Everything we had was delicious: nasi campur, nasi goreng ikan asin, lontong sayur, tempe mendoan. You really can't go wrong here. Everything is perfectly balanced between spicy, savory, and sweet. If you've never had Indonesian food before, I can recommend the nasi campur (literally "mixed rice") as it allows you to try a variety of items, including rendang - a classic Indonesian stewed beef. Unassuming ambiance plus friendly service make this place an A+ dining establishment that I would highly recommend if you're in the Houston area!

Yelp
A small restaurant with a lot of Indonesian options!
They also have a tiny grocery.
The Soto Ayam is excellent. Very flavorful.
Fried tofu appetizer is very yummy.
Batagor is decent.
Their sambal roa tuna fried rice is okay, I prefer more spicey.
Es Campur is not to my taste.
I definitely will be back to try more dishes!

Yelp
So glad to have Warung Indo around for authentic Indonesian food. My usuals are the lontong and soto ayam. Consistent taste and quality every time. Service is great, it's a family-run business, space is not huge but I've always found a table whenever I visit. Parking is easy.

Yelp
For the month I have been doing a weekly challenge to try cuisines from different regions of Asia for Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage month.
This week was Southeast Asia and decided to try Indonesian cuisine.
I was wrapping up a work conference across town and drove to Warung Indo. I was immediately greeted by the staff as I walked in. The service was great and was asked if I had any questions?
I did not but was a bit conflicted on two choices but choose the Nasi Campur mix rice. Which had steam rice, rendang, tempeh, boiled egg and a vegetable soup.
For the starters I went with bakso bakar (meatball skewers) and bakwan (veggie fritters).
The food was so good. I did not want it really spicy but just enough to know it is there. The rendang is hearty beef stew with a good blend of spices. The tempeh is combined with flavorful peppers. The boiled egg and vegetable soup were just as flavorful too.
The bakso bakar came as a set of 3 but I couldn't help myself and ate one already haha. Good sized meatballs with a great tasting peanut sauce to add on top.
The bakwan is crispy but also a nice size and amount for the order.
The restaurant ambiance is cozy. It's a family run business with a good amount of seating. At the time of the visit, I was the sole patron but I am sure the restaurant fills up on busier days.
I was definitely was stuffed of course because of everything I ordered. The prices are good. The main dishes and soups are under $20 and starters are under $10. Very nice family that is running the restaurant and helpful to teach me what are the dishes on the menu.
I did ask about satay on the menu, unfortunately they do not have it. But everything else I ordered was great. I would love to come back.
It was a great introduction for me to Indonesian cuisine.

Yelp
A place that feels like home! We love their authentic Indonesian food, and excellent service! Our favorites are their Nasi Bakar Tuna and Chicken, Tempeh Mendoan and Ketoprak!

Yelp
Authentic Indonesian food here!
It's a small restaurant, but it has warm and friendly staff. The staff treat you like a friend. Love the vibe.
I had the lontong sayur, fried rice with chicken, and es campur. The lontong sayur was super good, so flavorful. Portion was perfect too. The fried rice was very tasty. I can only get that flavor from an Indonesian restaurant. The es campur drink has red beans, jackfruit, grass jelly, coconut, condensed milk, cendol, and syrup. It is the perfect drink to end the meal.

Yelp
Great service - disappointing food! We have had Indonesian food before but this was NOT up to the mark at all.
Huyen N.
Yelp
Small family owned and ran restaurant. Food was ok, not excitingly delicious, but also not overly disappointing. It's edible but it wouldn't be a routine visit restaurant. Some dishes were better than others, and some lacked flavor. The fried food was dripping in oil as you ate it. Food took some time to be completed but the family was kind.

Yelp
I will definitely support this small business restaurant that reminds me of home. Bakso, ayam penyet and nasi bakar are my favorite ones.

Yelp
Authentic Indonesian restaurant! Good quality food and dessert. I love lontong sayur and cendol.
The service is a bit slow, i would suggest to make a call before physically be there so that we can have our food right away.
The restaurant is a bit small, more convincingly to take out instead of dine in actually.
I would recommend this restaurant

Yelp
Food was tasty, and the chilly was nice and spicy. The Rawan had nice pcs of soft beef.
Disappointed that it's not ALL Halal as was described on Yelp comments.

Yelp
The food is good and authentic.
The service is VERY SLOW, clearly understaffed, and not efficient. If you have lots of time on your hands, then definitely worth a visit. If you're in a hurry, then I would save your trip for when you're not in a rush.

Yelp
We had lunch here on Saturday. It's pretty busy but the service was fast. We ordered beef soup/soto daging, nasi goreng rendang, batagor and nasi bakar ayam, all were delicious. Worth the drive, since we live in Cypress area.

Yelp
Tried their nasi campur and ayam penyet turns out its reallyyyy deliciousss
Their sambal is really spicy that kick my mouth definitely will come back !!

Yelp
The best so far is The Ayam Penyet. You can ask the level of spiciness if you like really spicy. It was a hot day with a group of us but we had a great time.

Yelp
Indonesian food mediocre flavors weak, service fair, ambiance ok, not a place to return to

Yelp
This place is awesome. Delicious Indonesian food in a small, cozy atmosphere. I liked everything.

Yelp
Very authentic Indonesian food! The food was all very delicious and the staff are very friendly

Yelp
There are a number of Indonesian and Malaysian restaurants that grace Houston, and each one is worth frequenting. Indonesian and Malay food is one of the best culinary secrets not known by most of America- yet.
That said Warung Indo easily hits all the marks. The second Indonesian restaurant to hit Sugar Land, the food is delicious and the owners super-friendly and engaging. I'm partial to Soto Ayam, but anything you will try there should be delicious. If you feel lost looking at the menu just ask the owners, they'll steer you to a new palate experience.
Susy S.
Yelp
Excellent authentic Indonesian food. They also have some Indonesian snacks to purchase such as Rempeyek kacang/teri and few other packaged snacks.
Liam C.
Yelp
I'm sorry, I hate ragging on family owned businesses but I found a piece of hard plastic cooked in my entree. I think it was from the rice cracker package. Unfortunately I can't recommend this as a result...
L W.
Yelp
Great authentic Indonesian. Offers some harder to find dishes beyond bakso and rendang, like soto daging and rawon. Good portions and very tasty. The nasi campur is a good sampler of several dishes, and included the rendang when I ordered. They also sell some Indonesian snacks too! Can't wait to come back.
Andreas S.
Yelp
A great place for Indonesian food. The food is really good and the portion is generous. They often have specials that are not listed on the menu so don't forget to ask for the special!

Yelp
