My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Wren & Wolf back in June. We made a reservation for Sunday dinner weeks in advance. We parked at the Renaissance Square Garage on 1st Ave, which provides a three-hour parking validation and is just a short walk to the restaurant. When we arrived, we were greeted and seated right away.
I loved the vibe. The space is kinda moody and romantic and the decor is inspired by its name. Our server came to greet us after being seated and wished us a happy anniversary. He came back shortly with two glasses of complimentary champagne. Although he was generally good, there were times when we felt we had to initiate placing our order. He didn't offer appetizers, so we had to request them. He also didn't ask if we were ready to order entrees; we had to tell him. This made our visit longer than we anticipated. Even though I wanted dessert, we skipped it since we'd already been there for almost two hours and didn't want to stay any longer.
Fortunately, the food was fantastic. We started with drinks. I ordered the espresso martini and my husband ordered a mocktail. Then we ordered the following:
Oysters on the half shell $23
Noble country loaf, whipped truffle butter $7
Knife & fork wedge $18
Wild boar bolognese $28
Faroe island salmon $38
The espresso martini was delicious and so was my husband's mocktail. The oysters were fresh. The bread with whipped truffle butter was very good. We shared the knife and fork wedge, which was surprisingly large and great for sharing. The wedge came with niman ranch pork belly, balsamic cherry tomatoes, parsley, blue cheese vinaigrette. I don't usually go for wedge salads, but I really enjoyed theirs!
My husband originally wanted to order a steak, but after reading the description of the wild boar bolognese, he changed his mind. It came with creste di gallo, durham ranch wild boar, san marzano tomato, parmigiano reggiano, fried basil. He raved about this bolognese for days! I had hoped to try the scallops or lobster tagliatelle, but they were out of all seafood entrees except for salmon. I prepare salmon at home often so I really didn't want to order it, but was left with no choice as a pescatirian. I reluctantly settled for the salmon, but it turned out to be quite delicious. It was served with truffle beurre blanc, couscous, haricots verts, dehydrated cherry tomato, and lemon.
Overall, we had a good experience and would recommend Wren & Wolf for the ambiance, food, and cocktails. Don't forget to reserve a spot at their speakeasy, The Trophy Room, for a unique experience after dinner!
