I decided to venture away from the restaurants near my hotel adjacent to the convention center because I was craving Texas/southern style BBQ.
My walk (on Champa St) ended when I saw their sign and back patio area. The restaurant looks like a sort of island oasis as the building is flanked by well trafficked streets. Also it looks to be the only restaurant in the area, my quick scan noticing mostly apartments and mixed industrial spaces. You literally can't miss them! That said, it's more than a stand which isn't what I expected. The interior is spacious and has table service (upstairs), gathering/hangout space outside (and inside) as well as plenty of parking.
I was there around "linner" time, which was relatively empty of people. The dude at the counter was friendly and was more than happy to guide me through their menu.
I had a 3 meal meat combo: 2 ribs, pulled pork and brisket. Also had two sides: green beans and slaw. And dessert! I left full and was happy to be able to "walk off" my linner.
The pulled pork so awesome ! Tender, Smokey 100% delicious. I can say the same about the ribs and add they were very tender...I could have an entire rack no problem.
The brisket wasn't my favorite, I don't like the way it was served, which was chopped...not sure if it can be requested another way. I would have preferred slices of brisket. Also texture wise it was a little dry.
The sides were awesome! The cobbler, hmm, I loved it, as it was sweet but it didn't have any crust only some crunchy stuff that left me wanting crust...again delicious and very much a dessert but definitely not what I expected nor would describe as a traditional cobbler. Flavor was sold though.
Overall, my craving for BBq and desire to go outside of what's being offered near the convention center was more than satisfied.
Great meal at a great value. I think I spent less than $25 for my combo and dessert. I doubt I'll spend less money on food the rest of my time in the downtown area!
