NYC’s New Restaurant Openings

"While you patiently wait for Din Tai Fung to open (the lights are already on), you can get your xiao long bao fix at Yeh’s Bao, which is run by an alum of the famous dumpling chain. The restaurant is in FiDi, and has things like Chinese yams with wood ear mushrooms and black vinegar, alongside a flurry of dumplings, wontons, soups, and noodles." - will hartman

An Impending Tao-Backed Nightclub in Greenpoint Stirs the Community Board - Eater NY

"Hank Tang, who worked in the kitchen of a Taiwan location of Din Tai Fung, is leading the menu at Yeh’s Bao, a new casual Chinese restaurant. The menu includes soup dumplings, yam with wood ear mushrooms, and Taiwanese buns with fried shrimp or pork belly. Yeh’s Bao opened on May 15." - Emma Orlow

I was starving after a couple of days of more liquid than substance diet! Choices in the area were limited and what I really needed was comfort food. The weather in New York is still chilly which meant either a chicken burger (yes the fried type) or some good Chinese food. Yeh’s Bao Chinese Restaurant was what the doctor ordered. Plenty of choices without being overwhelming. They have a good lunch selection which could have done the trick had had not seen the bubbling box of delight that was my Hot Pot delivered to another table. I was going to be rather piggish and have the Xiolang Bao (soup dumplings) and the hot pot. But after what was maybe the best hot and sour soup I had in years (full vegetarian), I had to call off the Baos. They are freshly made to order, so had time to get the dumpling maker to cease! I just have to head back soon for the next fix. The service was attentive and very cordial. I did not have to ask for my water and rice was offered without me asking! The price was amazing considering the quantity and quality. After two days of $20 sliders, that dish was over the top and super reasonable. It will feed 2 amply, what you do not get with sliders. The hotpot was amazing. The broth was so tangy and rich. The fresh vegetables swam on top of a layer of thin sliced and somewhat fatty beef and glass noodles. I had requested hot oil, but in reality the velveteen sauce was pungent enough to light up my taste buds. I do not know that alone I could have done justice to the Hot Pot and Bao and I am craving more after two hours. No it is not there is more space in the stomach, but more imagining the gushing liquid from these little parcels of wonder. I cannot wait to go back. In ways, I kind of wanted to keep this place a secret a bit longer, but the owners deserve to get the foot traffic!

Google
Their food is delicious and comes very quickly. I had the shrimp soup dumplings and the general Tso’s chicken. Both were of large quantity, as was the chicken fried rice. Definitely great to share. I would definitely recommend as it is an amazing Chinese restaurant.

Google
Heard about their recent opening and came to check out Yeh’s Bao with my parents. (Their chef is ex-Din Tai Fung) We tried their signature pork XLB, shrimp and loofah XLB, steamed chicken soup, Chinese yam with black vinegar and wood ear, and beef stuffed scallion pancake. The soup dumplings (XLB) are juicy and a must try. Would also recommend the beef stuffed scallion pancake and steamed chicken soup. Yeh’s Bao is a great addition to the FiDi area!

Google
I had the best chicken lo mein that I’ve ever eaten! She flavorful and addicting. We came back the next night. My husband’s fried rice was excellent. Such friendly staff and they provided us with a few treats because we had to wait for our food. Will definitely come back next time we are in Manhattan.

Google
Best soup dumplings in town☺️ They always remind me of the flavors I loved as a kid. The crispy duck is quite nice as well. Walk-ins are fine. and we usually go around noon on weekends. It’s quieter and less crowded at that time. Be sure to grab a window seat and enjoy!😇

Google
I ordered takeout for dinner while on a work trip. This place did not disappoint. One of the best cucumber salads I’ve had. The braised beef noodle soup was delicious and cabbage stir-fry had great flavor. Although I didn’t eat in the restaurant, it looked bright, clean and inviting.

Google
I’ve had a lot of soup dumplings in my time and these ones really stood out. Just the right amount of soup at the right temperature . Super delicious and very good value for money. Portions are great and heaps of good options on the menu. Definitely would come back!

Google
DON’T GO. The staff will directly ask you how much tip you want to give, before allowing you to review the receipt. It was unprofessional and made the customers feel pressured. Would not recommend dining here.

Yelp
They focus on feeding you well, not impressing critics. The team shows dedication to customers and confidence in their menu. The location seems mismatched with the quality. The meals here surpassed what I thought possible. I'll definitely be back without delay.

Yelp
The restaurant is on a side street so a bit hard to find at first. We came on a weekend and there was no wait which was nice, but it was steaming hot out so I wish they turned on their AC a bit more. The service was friendly and fast with someone coming around frequently to fill our waters. We ordered - chinese yam and earwood mushroom salad 3/5, a bit small and the taste and sauce was thicker and different from the classic garlic and onion - braised beef noodle soup 4/5, hearty but tasted clean. the meat was very tender and the broth was tasty - fried pork chop 3/5 classic but nothing really stood out from it - stir fried cabbage and pork 5/5 my favorite dish here, a bit salty but great with a bowl of rice everything here was pretty good but the prices are a bit steep in my opinion

Yelp
It was pretty good and I had a pleasant dining for a quick check on its XLB! As a Din Tai Fung XLB lover, I would give the XLB 9 out of 10. Not greasy and the filling is solid. A bit lacking flavor but it is what it is. Will post an update with more dishes when I have another lunch or to go dinner. The service is good and attentive even it's a busy lunchtime.

Yelp
DON"T GO. The staff will directly ask you how much tip you want to give, before letting you review the receipt. It was unprofessional and made the customers feel pressured. Do not recommend this restaurant. After they swiped my card, a staff returned with a receipt. He didn't give it to us to let us review, he just hold it in front of us and ask how much tip we want.

Yelp
Based on the reviews and wanting to enjoy a light meal I stopped by Yeh's Bao, and I am so happy I did. The restaurant was almost full, I was immediately greeted and shown to a table. Walking in, I already viewed the menu and was ready to order. I ordered Xiao Long Bao and Spring Rolls. They both were One item that I wanted to order was the Steamed Chicken Soup, they ran out, I will definitely go back to try it.

Yelp
I was very excited of this knock-off-Din-Tai-Fung menu opening in downtown Manhattan. But it was a very underwhelming dinner. *Garlic Cucumber Salad - huge pieces and under seasoned. *Fried Pork Chop - thin, dry... *Wontons in Chili Oil - wonton filling was very dense *Scallion Pancake Wrapped Beef - dry, cold, missing sauce/seasoning *Soybean Dry Noodles (Zhajiangmian) - not loving the noodle type *Braised Beef Noodle Soup (Half Tendon, Half Meat) - lukewarm, not enough flavor (prob waterdown), beef was okay. *Signature Kurobuta Pork XLB - very thin skin i appreciate that but very light on flavor. *Shrimp and Loofah XLB - I was so excited for this as I could only get in Asia, but it was bland. This has such potential. Hope it gets better.

Yelp
Brought some family here recently and we had a pleasant time. The food was good and service was quick and friendly. Some of the standout dishes we had included chicken lo mein and spicy wontons in chili oil. The vibe is pretty lowkey making it a good casual meal in the area.

Yelp
The ambiance is great! The restaurant is very clean and staffs are very friendly and considerate. We have a toddler with us and he offered a lot of things before we asked. The food was great! It doesn't have very strong seasoning so we can taste the original taste from the ingredients.

Yelp
The absolute best Chinese I have EVER eaten!!! Stir Fry Pepper Beef & Okra was 11/10 absolutely phenomenal! The chicken Lomein was different than what we are used to but it's not heavy and perfectly cooked. The plum Vinegar was sooo tender and perfectly sweet bit not oversweet. The edemame was served cold and that was a nice change, the plum Vinegar matched perfectly. Very kind, attentive and polite. WILL BE ON OUR LIST WHEN WE RETURN FOR SURE!! I can only imagine the other menu items are just as awesome.

Yelp
Cute Chinese fusion restaurant in Financial District selling hot soup dumplings. The quality is very good and everything is made to order Too bad they only had two types of steamed dumplings and their spicy shrimp wonton is a letdown. Otherwise, a very solid choice in Financial District.

Yelp
I really liked this cute little restaurant in the Financial District. I am a huge fan of Xiao long bao and was craving some, from the pictures online this looked legitimate so I decided to take a chance in this new-ish restaurant. I'm very impressed with the authentic Xiao long bao. They are perfectly made: thin wrapper, pocket full of hot umami soup when you take the first bite, perfectly seasoned pork with slight sweetness, and served with ginger and vinegar the traditional Chinese way. I ordered some yam with wood ear appetizer and that was very tasty too, very crunchy and a little sour and sweet. I vouch for the authentic tastes at this restaurant based on the dishes I ordered. The complimentary edamame was a nice touch, but not really Chinese... so I think they are trying to appeal to the average American consumer with that. Service was fine, the waiter and the staff were standing around looking bored most of the time because they didn't have much business while I was there. I really hope their business will pick up, because the food is great and this is such a popular area (walkable from Battery Park and from the World Trade Center). I would definitely take my family here when we visit the financial district next time.

Yelp
Don't sleep on this place. Delicious Chinese food, with cool modern decor and soft jazz. A terrific combination of you asked me. I had the broiled fish, which was not what I was expecting but really good and I'm glad I ordered it. The broth was rich with spicy, sour, salty notes. The fish was soft, lightly poached yet so flavorful. I ordered a side of white rice to have with it but just had the soup, and left the rice because it stood so well on its own. Slices of finger, cilantro and pickles mustard greens added wonderful texture and flavor in each bite.

Yelp
Great soup dumping, the wrapping is super thin and tasty filling. Great service , contemporary decor.

Yelp
I don't know if anything here is fresh. The General Tsao's chicken was stringy and dry and mostly batter. The seaweed salad was like chewing shoelaces. The service was extremely spotty. Now it might be that I'm not familiar with this particular regional food but it was not good.

Yelp
The XLB (soup dumplings) are legit. Tried 90% of the menu, hard to go wrong. The folks there are really nice and attentive as well. Will come back.

Yelp
Elegant environment, outstanding service, real authentic Chinese food, with organic high-quality material, you can see the staffing and all people make phones, this is a real deal! 好吃,有机,高级食材,环境优美,服务员和蔼可亲,美味多汁的包子可以与鼎泰丰媲美!

Yelp
Authentic, delicious soupy dumplings!! You can tell it is authentic because you get ginger and vinegar to dip the dumplings with the skin is thin, with lots of beautiful folds. Service was attentive and environment very clean. Very nice XLB, will definitely come back again!!

Yelp
Went there for lunch and got the soup dumpling and cabbage/pork stir fry lunch specials. We also got the plum spare rib and everything was delicious. The decor is elegant and it's cool to see them make the soup dumplings live. They can do some upgrading on the paper menus though.

Yelp
Found this place completely by accident, as it is one of many places in Manhattan blockaded by scaffolding. We dipped in and were seated immediately. It was after 3pm so we missed the lunch special, but the prices weren't any more for the dish I was craving (shrimp fried rice) so it was fine. My wife ordered the appetizer spring rolls, and we both got cucumber salads. The shrimp fried rice was cooked perfectly, consistent throughout, spicy but not in a hot way. The spring rolls were flaky and tasty, the side sauce tangy and sweet, and the appetizer portion size was plenty for a meal if you're not that hungry (she wasn't). The two salads turned out to be a waste, as they were so big we couldn't finish one between us, so we will split one next time. It was good as well, and went well with the vinegar sauce served on the table. All in all a great experience and some of the best shrimp fried rice I have ever tasted. Will go again

Yelp
Just passing by the neighborhood and saw this new restaurant, ordered the soup dumplings, wow, these are the best soup dumplings in the US, it's super juicy and tender, the wrap is like paper thin, we haven't tasted anything like this in years......, we also tried the meaty sauce noodles, tasted like my childhood's memory. Not many people knew this place since they are new kid on the block, will come back to try other dishes.

Yelp
I was glad to find a new Chinese food spot in the financial district. The restaurant was very comfortable and service was good. Food unfortunately was only ok. The menu is clearly Taiwanese yet the restaurant doesn't advertise it. Hot and sour soup was too spicy and peppery. Tasted mala (Szechuan) and kind of tongue numbing. Also had bits of carrot which is not typical . The beef noodle soup had a soy sauce base and was on the bland side; especially after the overpowering hot & sour soup. Soup dumplings were tiny bite sized and the best item I tried. You can tell they were hand made, not frozen kind - ...but why so small? Overall, it seems that the restaurant tries hard to change up traditional Taiwanese foods - smaller soup dumplings, spicier mala hot & sour soup, beef noodle soup that tastes more Japanese style soy soup stock. It tries too hard to be Asian fusion/modern, but the changes don't add anything to the taste and gives up the authenticity of Taiwanese food. My suggestion is that they should embrace Taiwanese cuisine and don't hide it but mixing it with other food styles. Taiwanese food might be a less known style of Chinese cuisine but it is delicious when done correctly. 2 stars for food, plus 1 star for the comfy ambience.

Brian P.

Yelp
Food very good. The won tons in chili oil spicy and tasted great. Hot and Sour soup was solid and enough for Two share or a full meal for one.

Yelp
Really great place for lunch. The beef noodles has a very light broth, which is a nice change from other places. My favorite is how they braided the beef to be really tender. All the ingredients are really fresh. Service is great as well. Loved how elegant the ambiance is.

Yelp
Great soup dumplings with Kurobuka pork, roasted garlic chicken and pepper steak with okra taste so great !

Mike J.

Yelp
Food: Amazing! Dumplings were hot and perfect. Spring rolls were fresh and crunchy. Service: very accommodating to my picky girlfriend's needs. She wanted to sit at the bar and they set us up. Then she wanted to sit at a table and they moved us very nicely. My girlfriend told the server where to put to go orders (even tho she had no idea)- they listened to her and figured it out. The tables were clean and the utensil and sanitary products were great quality. The only negative was when I asked for the check, I looked over at the server and gave him a cue for the check with a head nod like 8 times before he noticed and I gave girlfriend the "ick"

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot. Their soup dumplings come in servings of 10!!!! Which is great! Everything made in house, chefs shaping dumplings the entire time we were here. The garlic sauteed string beans were AMAZING. Good vibes, clean set up, friendly staff. Will definitely becoming back!

Yang H.

Yelp
Very good Soup Dumpling restaurant, everything is new and fresh. The beef noodle soup is also good, I would like come next time

Yelp
Great food and I'm so glad it's close by. This is my go to spot in the neighborhood and the food is amazing. My go to order is the shrimp fried rice and okra.

Lili H.

Yelp
The waiter service is not good, having a glass of water pouring into the eater's pants. Although it is not intentional, still a bad experience.
