Best Restaurants in Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens | Eater NY

"The Cobble Hill outpost of this Bay Ridge restaurant serves traditional Yemeni food in a casual setting. The lamb dishes stand out here, along with the slow-roasted chicken over rice. Meals come with a warming bowl of broth and the portions are plentiful." - Robert Sietsema

Best Halal Restaurants in NYC | Eater NY

"The corner of Court Street and Atlantic Avenue has been a Yemeni neighborhood since the 1970s and Yemen Cafe is an anchor. Lamb haneeth is one of its don’t-miss dishes, a hulking shank cooked in a clay-lined oven called a taboon. There are also assorted kebabs of chicken and lamb as well as bean dishes and bread dips galore. These days, Yemen Cafe has grown with additional locations as well." - Caroline Shin

The Best Restaurants in Bay Ridge | Eater NY

"The original Yemen Cafe was founded in downtown Brooklyn on Atlantic Avenue in 1981 (and is still there), but this branch sprang up a decade ago, as Yemeni businesses migrated to Bay Ridge. The restaurant concentrates on standards of the cuisine, rather than more-recognizable Middle Eastern fare. Try the salta — a bubbling pot of meaty gravy with a foamy fenugreek emulsion on top — into which the restaurant’s fresh, round, slightly charred flatbreads should be dipped; or glaba — lamb stir-fried with tomatoes and onions." - Robert Sietsema

My sister in law recommended this place because she fell in love with the food after one visit. The food is absolutely phenomenal. We tried Shafoot, Chips Adani, and Hummus as appetizers. The Shafoot has such a fresh herby unique taste, it was my favorite of the three apps. Not gonna lie, when we first got the Chips Adani, my first thought was “these are just fries with sauce”, but after trying it I wanted to drink the sauce. And of course you can’t go wrong with Hummus. I liked the green herb sauce and pomegranate seeds, it was a great way to make their hummus stand out. After delicious apps, we knew we HAD to try one of each protein for entrees. We had Muva Fish, Chicken Fahem, for the lamb we asked the server for their recommendation. We also got another dish but I can’t remember the name, but also amazing. All the food was sooooo good. I definitely recommend the Aseer Leem, everyone at our table agreed it was an amazing drink. I also tried the Adani tea, it’s perfect if you like spiced tea.

This place is another hidden gem! The food was incredible - especially the fish with special dip sauce and warm bread mmmmmm! The staff made us feel like family. Highly recommend if you’re craving true Yemeni flavors!

Google
Yemenat was an amazing experience! I went with my college friend for the first time and we both loved it! The atmosphere and ambience is very cozy, clean and aesthetically pleasing. The hostess was very hospitable and came to check on our table multiple times and explained each dish to us. She also offered us complementary tea which was delicious. When my friend and I asked the hostess if she could take a photo of us to remember the occasion, she kindly agreed. The food was incredible!! My favorites were the Beef Fahsa and the Hummus. I will be bringing my friends and family here. Cannot recommend enough!

The food at Yemenat is absolutely amazing - a real gem in the neighborhood like no other. Every meal is a treat for the taste buds, full of fresh ingredients and great flavors. I’ve tried most of the menu, including the muva fish, chicken fahem, lamb haneeth, kebdah lamb liver, and my personal favorite, shafoot. From the bread and rice to the dessert sundae and tea, everything has been delicious. The team here is really kind and attentive. You can tell the owners put their heart and passion into what they do. I’ll definitely be back soon, and if you haven’t been yet, I highly recommend giving it a try!

Google
I saw the amazing reviews online and thought I needed to try this place before I left New York. Walked in and it’s small, but not too tiny. When we walked in, they had oud burning, and it was a really nice OUD. We ordered chicken and lamb, haneeth For dessert, we got Areeka With the mail, we had the traditional tea that’s complementary. The salad was a nice starter. The lamb and the chicken and rice were all really delicious. The dessert was not as good as I would’ve liked. It’s usually made with a nice thick, sweet cream, but this one was made with just whipped cream. It was a little dry. The waiters were really nice and polite. The only thing I would change is the Areeka. It’s one of my favorite things to order at a Yemini restaurant and it was definitely not up to par with the rest of the food we had that was amazing.

We came here with our family of 12 people. We loved everything. The dishes were unique, the lamb melted in our mouths, and the fish was fresh and juicy. Despite the crowd, the staff handled everything smoothly. The bread deserves a special mention — it reminded us of home, the village, and childhood. Wishing you all the best and continued success!

Google
It was such a refreshing visit to the restaurant that i cant stop myself to write these comments. Highly recommended for the food, the atmosphere and service. Must visit. The lady with the smile to warmly welcome you was the beginning and the yemeni sundae was a great end to our today's visit.

One of the best meals i've had in New York City, including some really special dishes i've never had anywhere else. Great balance of heartiness and lightness, strong flavors and delicate touch. Just really special food. You won't be sorry you tried!

Yelp
You can really feel the passion and heart this restaurant has for feeding the community. There was a short wait to get a table on a Friday eve. Once seated we were explained the menu and the breads we saw on the tables. For two we shared: Appetizer Faoul - came with bread to dip, was delicious Main Roast chicken and rice : shareable but maybe want a second protein. Enjoyed the long grain rice and the chicken was delicious. Fish - lovely preparation Dessert - they offer two but we will have to come back for it. Was too full this time ! Tea is self serve in the back. They also have a few beverage offerings on the menu that sounded interesting.

Yelp
Dropped by Yemenat for dinner. The place was packed and buzzing with energy, so booking in advance is a must. We had reserved a table a day prior, but still had to wait about 10 minutes for it to be cleared and cleaned. Others who had bookings seemed to wait even longer, so keep that in mind. The place was loud, but in a good way--full of energy and excitement. The aroma of spices hit us the moment we walked in, and we couldn't wait to dive into the menu. For starters, we ordered Shafoot, Lamb Sughar with Hummus, and Salatah. The Shafoot tasted like fluffy bread dipped in a pesto-like sauce--not really my thing, but my friends liked it. Lamb Sughar was okay, nothing standout. Then came the main course: * Lamb Haneeth - perfectly cooked, tender, and full of flavor. The fragrant rice it came with was just as amazing. * Beef Fahsa - shredded beef cooked in rich, bold spices. This was the standout dish for me--absolutely delicious! * Rashoosh (Yemeni bread) - soft, flavorful, and paired perfectly with the Fahsa. For dessert, we had Areeka, a warm cinnamon-flavored treat that was perfectly balanced--not too sweet, just right. We wrapped up with Chi, Yemeni black tea, which helped settle everything nicely. We ended up staying until 10:30 PM, not realizing it was closing time. The staff was kind and didn't rush us out, which we appreciated. Good food, good vibes--you'll definitely leave in a good mood!

Yelp
This is my second time to be in Bay Ridge and the food never disappoints. Yemeni food has been in my list for several years now. Today was the day i get to try it I had the fermented bread with herb buttermilk. It definitely is something like no other. I normally have bread and a separate dip. This one was covered with the green buttermilk sauce. It was refreshing in every bite for a hot summer day. The second dish was braised lamb over Hadrami rice. The meat was so tender and pulls apart deliciously. The rich flavor of the lamb was complimented very well by how refreshing the fermented bread with the herbed buttermilk. The pomegranate added these pop of ruby colored jewels in each bite. The staff weregreat. The wait for good was we quick. The place was not pretentious. It was simple and clean. "لذيذ" ladhiidh

Yelp
Excellent excellent food. Polished and comfortable. We walked in without a reservation on Friday night with a group of five and was seated without an issue. The charbroiled chicken was excellent, as well as the lamb sughar with hummus. The bread reminds me a bit of a scallion pancake in its flaky texture and was amazing in combination with the sughar and hummus. The Beef Fahsa was okay, but I'm not a huge fan of stew in general. It was colorful, filling, flavorful, and rich without being too heavy. The tomato/feta and pickled lime sides were good but I wouldn't order it again. Maraq was also okay, but my favorite will always be from Yemen Cafe. Next time, I would love to try the shafoot, which looked beautiful in presentation.

Yelp
Yemenat in Bay Ridge was amazing. The vibes were so nice and felt really authentic. The food was perfect -- everything was so fresh and flavorful. I especially loved the bread, it was so good. The fahsa was delicious too, definitely one of the best I've had. I'll 100% be coming back. Food came out very fast. Service was very nice.

Yelp
A place so nice, I had to come back twice in two days! Bay Ridge is quite a distance from my end of town but whenever I'm in the area I make sure to maximize on the offerings one of Brooklyns's best neighborhoods has to offer. Yemenat was a superb dining destination and the presentation of the food was quite progressive while maintaining authenticity, which is not an easy task while keeping prices reasonable. The ambiance here is somewhere between semiformal and casual: it's not fancy but it's also not a total hole-in-the-wall. The space is simple but clean and inviting, and the service is attentive, though a bit confusing at times as to who does what and where. There's a counter all the way in the back but you can seat yourself at a table and someone from the staff will bring you a menu and take your order. All else aside, the star of the show at Yemenat is the food. The menu has plenty of variety in terms of meat, seafood and vegetarian options and my friend and I split a shafoot, an order of the lamb burma, and an order of the areeka with an Adani tea to wash it down. The flavors of Yemeni food are subtle but the textures were quite unique and made the experience pleasant. The shafoot was soft and spongy with a tartness at the end that made it delectable, the burma was fall off the bone tender and each bite was as succulent as could be. My favorite dish of the meal, and what made me come back the very next day, was the areeka: shredded bread mashed with dates and under a layer of cream, honey, and black seed make for a unique and exceptionally smoky and tasty aftertaste. Great experience and absolutely worth a visit!

Yelp
We got the shafoot, beef fahsa, rashoosh (bread), lamb sughar with hummus, foule, muva fish, adani tea and areeka dessert combined with their cardamom caramel ice cream. The quality was excellent overall, as was the attentive service. A few comments on the individual dishes: - shafoot - this came highly recommended by both our waiter and on Yelp, and it's not something I've seen in other Yemeni restaurants in the City; it's bread topped with herbed buttermilk and pomegranate seeds; although it sounded and looked great, the flavors didn't completely cohere; the sourness of the buttermilk made the bread taste and feel sort of like injera bread in an Ethiopian restaurant - beef fahsa - I've had this dish in other Yemeni restaurants, but this version was very satisfying, with the stewed beef being full of flavor and having perfect texture - lamb sughar with hummus - this was probably our favorite dish; hummus and lamb were both delicious - muva fish - this was a filleted fish with a spice rub and a garlicky, cheesy mayo on the side; it wasn't spectacular but was very satisfying - foule - this is a fava bean dish, and again, it was nothing spectacular but a very solid version of this dish - rashoosh - this is their bread, and it was actually one of the highlights despite its simplicity; perfect for dipping - adani tea - sweetened Yemeni tea with condensed milk; very flavorful and a pleasant accompaniment to the food - the rice that came with several of the dishes is worth its own bulletpoint because it was also delicious - dessert - so, they have two desserts on the menu, the areeka, which is a traditional Yemeni dessert where they mash up their delicious bread and then add dates, honey and cream, and then they have a second dessert, which is cardamom ice cream with caramel and some other stuff in it, and since we couldn't decide, they suggested an off-menu special, which is basically a combo of the two desserts, so you get the areeka, with a bit less cream than it would normally have, topped with their cardamom ice cream; the thing is that the cardamom flavor is a bit too strong in the ice cream, and the ice cream is very sweet, so we all actually preferred the spots where we were just tasting the regular cream that came together with the areeka, which is a much more subtle and appropriate topping for the delicious bread/honey/date layer, and next time we go, we'll just get the areeka dessert. In any event, overall, this was a great experience, and we'll definitely go back, as this was one of the City's better Yemeni restaurants.

Yelp
Tho I do have some questions? Which I'll put forth later on. It's a great spot with great food. We were a semi larger table (7) and other than my son and daughter we were a bit lost on the menu. The server was very helpful on guiding us through the menu. The decor is interesting with an old style copper ceiling surrounded by wood. They have free tea which is self serve ( interesting). So here are the questions. Don't look at the on line menu, the one in the restaurant is totally different. I was not able to see any legal documentation anywhere(DOH). So other than that food is great worth the visit

Yelp
Wow this place was amazing. We saw it on Instagram and wanted to check it out. They were very busy on a Friday night and the wait was about 45 minutes. Although I knew very little about the Yemen culture, I felt very unjudged here when asking questions about the menu. Very fresh food. The cherry on top for me was the complimentary tea at the end that you can grab for yourself. The chicken liver with the hummus is the MAIN EVENT of that menu. Make sure to get it! The place itself is very lovely. Above casual I'd say. For ladies coming that are not Yemeni, I'd suggest dressing a bit more conservative to be respectful to the culture. Can't wait to go back and try new items

Yelp
Delicious food and great service! The dishes were full of authentic Yemeni flavor, and the atmosphere felt just like being in Yemen. Definitely a place I'll be coming back to!

Yelp
Wow. Wow. Wow. Mashallah this place was amazing. The service was great and the food was even better. My friends and I went here on a girls night out and we enjoyed every second of it. I was especially blown away by the grilled chicken. I'm not a chicken fan in general so imagine my surprise when this place had such juicy flavorful chicken. The fish as well was season to perfection. And the rice !! Oh my. The rice was amazing. And the adeni iced tea was a great way to refresh our pallet. I will definitely be coming back with my family. 10/10 very worth the trip !!

Yelp
Ambiance: casual vibe with a big screen toward the front showing images of popular dishes. Table service. Service: very prompt and reliable. Explained dishes well. Food: the special tea was excellent. A great blend of spice in the black tea. The yogurt-soaked bread was interesting. Texture wasn't the best for me. Tastes were complex and good overall. The beef stew dish (in the broth) was excellent. Tons of flavor. Looks small but it was sufficiently sized. Comes with a thin bread (sorta similar to naan but crispier and less doughy). Price is a little high for the quantity but I think the tastes justify it. A wonderful spot in Bay Ridge, and certainly worthy of Pete Wells's final restaurant review for the NYTime.

Yelp
Came here & the food was right on point! Service was great, worker's were nice, and best of all the place was clean.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. It's become a staple in my rotation. The service is always wonderful and the staff are very attentive. The food comes out piping hot, incredibly fresh, and very flavorful. I really like the rustic, woodsy vibe of the place. I've eaten here multiple times and have tried fish and chicken options. They do switch up the menu so I will be back for more. Soup and bread are must haves!

Yelp
We had such a wonderful time. The food was pretty quick, it was delicious. ! The lamb , the shafoot and the icecream! Wow! Servers were really nice & the place was full of life. Would definitely come back here again to try more dishes.

Yelp
Came here with my husband for lunch. The service was superb. The chef introduced himself and asked for any feedback. The food is absolutely delicious! Hands down the best Yemeni food in NY. We had the beef fahsa, adeni chips, bagia and limeade. The Bahia is a Yemeni version of falafel but extra seasoned. For dessert we had areeka and it was scrumptious! The great choice of Yemeni music and the decor made our experience even better. This place is a must try!

Yelp
I had never had Yemeni food before and this was amazing! We went after seeing it featured by Pete Wells as the last restaurant he reviewed for the NYT. The owner served us and was so kind. We told him it was our first time and he taught us how to eat certain dishes and walked us through how we should order. We got the grilled chicken, a refreshing flatbread dish (green pictured below), and the lamb. The lamb was to die for. I'd come back and just get that a million times. Make sure to get the lamb soup it comes with and put a little over your rice.

Mohammad Q.

Yelp
Really amazing food, you feel its a home made , Highly recommend There fish , Fahsa & the bread

Laila K.

Yelp
This was my first foray into Yemeni cuisine and it did not disappoint. We went during Chef Akram's residency and it was packed. We ordered the foule, lamb haneeth, and muva fish. We loved everything but the lamb haneeth was our favorite. It was so flavorful, tender, and perfectly seasoned. I can't wait to go back.

Jessica W.

Yelp
Honestly the food was very delicious! From the soup to the hummus to the entree! My only complaint is that I can't believe that they charge $5 for the bread! You would think that it would've been complimentary.
google avatar

Lamees A.

Yelp
Amazing food, very friendly people! Favorite dishes were the Beef Fahsa, Lahm Sughar, Muva fish, and Areeka (mixed with icecream). Highly recommend eating here :)
google avatar

Sammy S.

Yelp
Went here with 10 others. They had no lamb at 8:30 on Friday night. How do you not have lamb at a yemen restaurant? We should've gotten up and walked out. That was just the start of our bad night at this place. The other food was eh. I'll probably never go here again.
google avatar

Onj J.

Yelp
The food here is made with such care. We had the Shafoot which was perfect for a summer day, a cool herby minty yogurt soup served over spongy Lahooh bread, with pomegranate seeds on top. Delicious and refreshing. Then we shared a double lamb haneeth, slow cooked so the super tender meat just slid off the bone. It was served over basmati rice with almonds and a spicy vegetable dressing on the side, to add according to your preference. We really loved all of it, as well as the lovely, informative service and the bright clean lively room. I'm happy to announce that there were zero rat droppings, zero cockroaches and zero backyards (though the latter might be nice). The writers of those one star reviews sound pretty confused. Highly recommended!

G B.

Yelp
Two dings on this place , the prices escalate rapidly (want meat? Prepare to break $20 on one dish) and because it's so boiling hot it obscures flavor & seasoning (the cardamom tea bumped it to 4 stars, 3 for the food). Chill vibe, can take your time here.

Debra C.

Yelp
I love this place! I can't wait to come back. This chef is amazing n made the best recommendations. I am not crazy about liver but this dish was literally one of the best dishes I have ever ate! The fish was excellent as the special sundae he created. I hope he's still there when we return because that was the best meal I had in a long time. We dine out a lot but this place was something special. Great service n convenient location in Bay Ridge.I thank my daughter for taking me!

Hamza L.

Yelp
Great neighborhood, professional and accommodating wait staff, clean, attention to detail, variety of food that tastes great. Had the muva fish, beef fahsa, hummus. Will be back for more.

Cameron B.

Yelp
Loved having lunch here! Delicious bread and soup/salad at lunch. Ordered hummus with lamb and babagaboush, and a half chicken entree to split. We got our food quick and hot. No complaints, will be back!!

Michael J.

Yelp
I heard a lot about this place so I decided to take my self and two sons their for late lunch. We had no reservation as they only take reservations. However, they were nice enough to accommodate us and give us a table. We took the chef's recommendations for the fish. It was delicious. We also took Sanaa kebab along with the chicken aqdah. Overall, I'm very pleased with Food and also the service.

Ahlam A.

Yelp
Very delicious! Owners are very nice and their menu will have you coming back! The shafoot is my favorite thing!! 2nd fav is the liver, 3rd fav is the fish!!!

Yelp
I rarely read newspaper restaurant6 reviews. Why would I follow someone I do not know and have never spoken to ? Then, Pete Wells' last review had me curious since I am very familiar with food from many places in the Middle East, but I have never had Yemeni food. So we went for dinner. It was a sold hour subway ride, we just missed a downpour and I was taking someone to a place I had never been.....this is not the usual me. But we went. And a good thing too ! Yemenat was a total success. Everything was great. We had aqdah lamb and rashoosh and lamb suqhar. We would have ordered more but the portions were very generous and we should have come not having eaten breakfast or lunch ! The food was very flavorful and interesting, and thank goodness ! not salty the way so much restaurant food is these days. The service was friendly and attentive and the prices are more than fair. It may be an hour subway ride, but one can get a lot of reading done and know that a superb meal is waiting. We will go back soon, there are many other dishes to try.

Plall K.

Yelp
The food is a amazing the service is the best I like the season on the fish is so delicious
google avatar

Faruck B.

Yelp
The food was ok,not like moms the ambiance was decent although I did see a few cockroaches this was a big turnoff.I actually lost my appetit.

Linda M.

Yelp
As I stated in my previous review, I was going to the bathroom and ended up in the backyard. The place is filthy, and there are rat droppings all over the place, very unsanitary. I never said anything about eating in your backyard. You may show the very nice front atmosphere, but your place is filthy filled with rat droppings everywhere.I'm sure if people look up the citations that you have they will see for themselves that you have violations and have not taken care of them. You may put up a good front and have the place looking good when people walk in but AGAIN (unsanitary). Not to mention your staff is smoking up a storm,It reeks of nicotine.I could smell smoke as I'm eating. If you got rid of the smoke feast I would return as I did enjoy the food. But who wants to smell cigarettes and know that rats or nearby nesting in the food. Now I understand why the names of this location changes so often.Either it's a scam for a loan or a tax write off.Whatever the case may be ,not worthy.

Slimane O.

Yelp
We came here after we saw Pete Wells review in the NYT. The food here is sooooo good! We order the Fahsa shrimp that came with the Rashoosh (bread) and we order their famous rice. The service was fast and a mazing and really liked the ambiance and the music .Highly recommend!!!

Mohammed E.

Yelp
Terrible customer service, small dishes over priced, no care for customer wants and needs, always delayed services without reason

Carolyn C.

Yelp
We came here few times and the food were great. My son loves the beef fahsa and always order that when we come. Bbq or grill fish were good and we usually order the fish and fried shrimp. We will always try something new when we go for different experiences.

Elaf A.

Yelp
Good eats, food came out quick and good portions. The fahsa dish was so flavorful was paired nicely with the Yemeni bread. Would recommend for authentic Yemeni eats.

Joanna N.

Yelp
The food and service at Yemenat are amazing. I have been to a number of Yemeni restaurants in New York (all great), but this one is still really special. I've tried the fahsa beef and lamb haneeth so far, and they were both incredible. The fahsa was, without exaggeration, a revelation. The salad and tea were lovely, too, and the staff were so friendly. I live across town from Bay Ridge, but Yemenat was well worth the trek. I plan to go back many times and bring friends. I hope to try everything on the menu eventually.

Mohammad A.

Yelp
authentic Yemeni food. the Saltah was delicious and so was bread which was fresh and hot. the service was good and servers were friendly and prompt. I would eat there again in a heartbeat!
