Yelp
We got the shafoot, beef fahsa, rashoosh (bread), lamb sughar with hummus, foule, muva fish, adani tea and areeka dessert combined with their cardamom caramel ice cream. The quality was excellent overall, as was the attentive service. A few comments on the individual dishes:
- shafoot - this came highly recommended by both our waiter and on Yelp, and it's not something I've seen in other Yemeni restaurants in the City; it's bread topped with herbed buttermilk and pomegranate seeds; although it sounded and looked great, the flavors didn't completely cohere; the sourness of the buttermilk made the bread taste and feel sort of like injera bread in an Ethiopian restaurant
- beef fahsa - I've had this dish in other Yemeni restaurants, but this version was very satisfying, with the stewed beef being full of flavor and having perfect texture
- lamb sughar with hummus - this was probably our favorite dish; hummus and lamb were both delicious
- muva fish - this was a filleted fish with a spice rub and a garlicky, cheesy mayo on the side; it wasn't spectacular but was very satisfying
- foule - this is a fava bean dish, and again, it was nothing spectacular but a very solid version of this dish
- rashoosh - this is their bread, and it was actually one of the highlights despite its simplicity; perfect for dipping
- adani tea - sweetened Yemeni tea with condensed milk; very flavorful and a pleasant accompaniment to the food
- the rice that came with several of the dishes is worth its own bulletpoint because it was also delicious
- dessert - so, they have two desserts on the menu, the areeka, which is a traditional Yemeni dessert where they mash up their delicious bread and then add dates, honey and cream, and then they have a second dessert, which is cardamom ice cream with caramel and some other stuff in it, and since we couldn't decide, they suggested an off-menu special, which is basically a combo of the two desserts, so you get the areeka, with a bit less cream than it would normally have, topped with their cardamom ice cream; the thing is that the cardamom flavor is a bit too strong in the ice cream, and the ice cream is very sweet, so we all actually preferred the spots where we were just tasting the regular cream that came together with the areeka, which is a much more subtle and appropriate topping for the delicious bread/honey/date layer, and next time we go, we'll just get the areeka dessert.
In any event, overall, this was a great experience, and we'll definitely go back, as this was one of the City's better Yemeni restaurants.
