Minimal-chic, upscale Japanese restaurant with artfully plated tasting menus & inventive drinks.
"This year Yugen is doing a play on Osechi Ryori, which are the foods typically eaten on New Year’s day in Japan. There are two options to choose from, priced at either $150 or $300 per person, with dishes like crab or lobster motoyaki with crispy potatoes and caviar; kombu-wrapped smoked trout, truffle chawanmushi, uni, grape and celery; and desserts like coconut mochi cake and red bean dorayaki. Everything comes in jubako boxes, and there is an option to add a $200 wine pairing. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

"It’s been just over six months since the sudden closure of Yugen, the lauded Japanese restaurant in West Loop, shocked Chicago’s fine dining fans." - Naomi Waxman
"Yugen, the pricey Michelin-starred restaurant, closed last month in West Loop as its owners prepare to open a new restaurant in the space." - Naomi Waxman
"Yugen, known for its $215 per-person tasting menu, suddenly closed. The restaurant, which replaced the three-Michelin-starred Grace in 2018, had found success under executive chef Mari Katsumura. Despite retaining much of Grace's look, Yugen stood out for its food, service, and talented staff. However, Katsumura resigned in May, and without her, the menu didn't make sense. Owner Michael Olszewski praised the staff and hinted at a new restaurant opening in the same space." - Ashok Selvam
