The Best Restaurants to Try Between Los Angeles and Palm Springs | Eater LA

"Be warned, the portion sizes are large at Zeke’s. While servers tend to steer diners toward hot cakes, ham steaks, and biscuits and gravy, the surest move is the all-day traditional breakfast platters with bacon, classic sausage, or hot Polish sausage, a side of perfectly cooked hash browns, and a choice of toast, a small pancake, or gravy-doused potatoes. Take it all down in the green-carpeted dining room that feels transported straight from a bygone era." - Mona Holmes

Google
I really wanted to like this place more given the reviews and the AI recommendation. It was fine. Very average food. For example, they tout their biscuits and gravy but it was low end stuff you didn't really want to even finish. Not horrible, but I would not go here.

Google
Got the kitchen sink omelette was not disappointed really good price was good size portion with hashbrowns omelette and biscuits and gravy. I’m not a big fan of biscuits and gravy, but I guess that place is really known for it so I had to give it a shot and it did not disappoint not to mention the service was great. The server was quick and made sure we were taken care of.

Google
Local place with friendly staff and homey atmosphere but the food was very run of the mill. They have some novelty items like giant pancakes and the portions are generous, but it's Sysco food. Both my and my husband's eggs were drenched in liquid margarine, their "famous" biscuits and gravy was a dry, freeze and bake brick and the gravy had no meat. The lumps in the photo were improperly whisked flour from the gravy mix. Given the mediocre level of the food, it also felt too expensive. It was $36 for breakfast for 2 people.

Google
This cozy place has THE MOST AMAZING breakfast foods. My gawwddd it was chef's kiss good. 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼 Thankfully I don't live close enough to this place to eat there every day or I'd be well on my way to being the next star of My 600 lbs Life. I had the corned beef hash and husband had the chicken fried steak. Both were straight up delicious 🤤🤤. Biscuits and gravy to die for. Most definitely coming back here! If you end up having to wait a bit to eat here, I promise it'll be worth it!

Google
Food is good, it’s a classic spread, and it’s a great value. The coffee is really good (I had 5 cups) I also like that it’s not heavily salted so that I could season to taste. If you put your country fried steak in your grits, you can eat it faster. Update: came back for more

Google
1st time visit. I was seated right away , greeted by my waitress ( short hair . I believe her name was Gabriela)) I ordered chicken omelet and 1 iced tea . The omelet was yummy , chicken seems to be organic not processed. Ice tea had after taste like metal taste . Overall was good experience. Bad side is you need to update your restaurant. Like for real . Carpet floor come on . We re in 2025 . Also restroom needs renovation.. Will be back again for the omelet and the service . Thank you

Google
Straight to the point, food didn't come out hot. It was warm and honestly don't know how it's not hot if it's made fresh to order. Ordered French toast with a side of sausage links and egg. The sausage links were not hot either, also this is a preference, I do prefer to receive my food hot maybe with a little steam coming off of it but nothing of the sort. The coffee was mid, the creamer barely saved it. The biscuits and gravy was okay at best nothing special, barely any flavor profile on the gravy, the fries were decent. Service was good, friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was okay, points for the table not being sticky.

Google
I was told about this 27 years ago by the owners family i had worked with at another job. Order the polish sausage and 2eggs with hash browns and biscuits and gravy. And yes floor needs to be updated but food was not bad. Service was great and I spoke with the owners, they bought the place 2 years ago and they seem like great people. People who know me know that I always leave a review everywhere I go no matter how good or bad the experience. I do this so restaurants can help make there place better, if I owned a restaurant I would hope others will share their experiences with me so that I too can make my place a better for all who come. Yes I will be going back to try it again.

Yelp
Tucked in the corner of a plaza, it's a homey atmosphere as you walk in. It looks like a hole in the wall, but I would AVOID. - 2 eggs, half hash browns, 1 bacon 1 sausage 2.1/5 Eggs came out perfect, hash browns were crispy on the top, but wow, the bacon and sausage was such a let down. The bacon was thick cut but VERY overcooked, burnt pieces on one side. Tasted bad.. the sausage was steamed or boiled, disappointment. - Biscuit & gravy side 1.1/5 Apparently their "world famous" biscuit and gravy.. not sure what's famous about it. The biscuit was hard and dry and tasted old. The gravy was lacking flavor was wasn't even hot when it came out. - Chicken & Waffles 1.4/5 Waffles smelled good when it came out and looked picture perfect. It lacked heavily in flavor. One of the worst waffles I've ever had. The chicken was chicken strips, which we were okay with having. The chicken was over-battered, over-fried, and very bland. It was not tender. Free parking in huge lot.

Yelp
This place is just a few block from my house so I had to give it a try! My friend also said their biscuits and gravy's really good so I just had to taste it for myself. We ordered for takeout which was completed relatively quick for a Sunday morning. Their breakfast comes with 2 eggs, hash browns or country potatoes , and biscuits and gravy. Let me just start off by saying that their portion is HUGE! It is definitely shareable! Collectively we ordered: Country fried stick with biscuits and gravy - 6/10 Belgium waffle with extra bananas - 7.5/10 The country fried steak was good but it was a little dry. The hash-browns weren't crispy and it was a bit soggy. The eggs that came with it were not seasoned but maybe that's the point since you're supposed to eat it all with the gravy. Their biscuits and gravy could have been a lot better. Just like the country fried steak, the biscuit was dry. The gravy was good and it was what made the biscuit and country fried steak good. The Belgium waffle was great. It was soft and chewy and it tasted really good with the bananas and syrup. Friendly staff so that's a plus! And the restaurant itself was very homey and gave an old diner feel!

Yelp
Stopped in for a late breakfast and were immediately seated at a clean booth. The staff was very warm and welcoming throughout our entire meal. I ordered the 4 sausage link breakfast which included toast, 2 eggs, and hashbrowns. It was your typical below average diner food that arrived quickly and the quality wasn't anything special. My colleague had the "Man Sized Cakes", which were absolutely massive pancakes. They weren't horrible but very tough that you couldn't even cut through them with a fork. We watched 2 other tables send their food back during our meal so I don't think we were the only ones experiencing a subpar breakfast.

Yelp
They serve grits. My meal was delicious and satisfying. I had the bacon breakfast. Home potatoes. Side of grits. I didn't care much for the pancakes..reminded me of Dennys. Service was quick and excellent.
google avatar

Yelp
The staff and service has always been top notch. This morning was another example of attentiveness by our server. We were welcomed the moment we walked in, our drink order was immediately taken and our coffee cups never ran empty or cold. I don't come here as often as I'd like but when I do it's always an enjoyable experience and the food (chorizo and eggs) is always a staple I enjoy, can't forget to try their biscuits and gravy!

John D.

Yelp
Friendly servers, good food, large portions, fair prices my only complaint is with the country gravy, it taste good but is so thick it's like eating paste.
google avatar

Debbie P.

Yelp
Place is welcoming. They have good staff from seating to serving. They have a vast menu so you are not simply limited to breakfast in the morning, lunch at a certain time. Generous portions and you have a choice of sides . They check back to make sure everything is going well. The prices are reasonable, noise level is tolerable.
google avatar

Yelp
Fun place that's well decorated, food was served quickly and at a good price not much more than that

Yelp
My first visit to Zekes was at the old address back around 1998. It was fabulous. Last week, we went back and it just wasn't the same. I could tell when I walked in that things just weren't the same. The food was "ok" I guess, but it was better back in the day. They didn't have a couple of items that were on the menu. That was disappointing. I remember them having sweet tea. Not any more. It's hard to place my finger on exactly what was different and wrong, but I think we've all had that feeling where you know something isn't the same, but it's hard to explain.

Klaudia W.

Yelp
Grab some food to-go. Picked up the French dip and a Philly steak. No flavor on the steak. Rather than thin slices it was a dry, flavorless cuts of steak. Sandwich tasted like nothing. And pretty disappointing. French dip was also pretty plain. Just a couple slices of meat in the bread roll. Au just was mediocre but it helped with the Philly giving it some flavor. Fries were delicious at least. For the 33 dollars spent I'm very disappointed in the food. Possibly a place that's good for breakfast only.
google avatar

Yelp M.

Yelp
A small, cozy spot with good food. The service is average, but the prices are reasonable for the portion sizes. Overall, I would recommend it. I've dined there about 10x over the last 7 years.

Yelp
This place has been on my to do list for a long while. " The best breakfast in Ontario " is quite a flame from a place in the center of a strip center. I opted for a waffle combo with sausage & a poached egg. Mom chose to have a ham and cheese omelette it came with a pancake. We both had juice &coffee. The food arrived & the pancake took up a platter on its own. The waffle was crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Flavor wise everything was good. I might go bacon next time as the sausage was good but nothing special. Service was great our server was attentive & kept our coffee filled. The atmosphere, the menu has a back story of Zeke the prospector . Lots of John Wane pictures. It is a small place very clean. The white curtains on the windows were spotless. I would put it in the top breakfast spots. I plan to try lunch soon

Peter C.

Yelp
They had good French toast. The orange juice tasted fresh squeezed. The hashbrowns were nice and crispy too. big portions.
google avatar

JR M.

Yelp
Food is OK. Prices are fair good family restaurant in no hurry to go back.. Next time I go, I'll try the biscuits and gravy with a chicken fried steak .
google avatar

Yelp
Every time we come here for breakfast it's simply the best...great service with a fantastic staff. Food cooked to order and hearty portions...our server Gabriella was warm and welcoming this morning...we will be back and highly recommend Zekes!!!!!

Yelp
Small quaint diner with a Western theme. Casual dining. Friendly staff. I ordered the Kitchen Sink Omelet, which came with hash browns and a side of their famous biscuits & gravy. My omelet was good. Some of my hash browns were cooked really hard & I couldn't eat them. I was able to salvage a good portion of it. The gravy on the biscuits had a nice flavor, and the biscuit underneath was good. Breakfast and lunch are served all day and they have quite a few options at reasonable prices. New items on the menu include chicken & waffles and also fried catfish that can be served with grits. Service was fast, and the serving sizes are nice. I would recommend this spot.
google avatar

Gary O.

Yelp
Good food, good service. Place is clean and employees were nice. Plenty of seats and plenty of parking available. The wheat toast was my favorite. Coffee was nice and hot and they filled it often. Prices are reasonable. I recommend this place.
google avatar

Sauti B.

Yelp
The service was excellent. The ham steak was huge and I got the small portion. Didn't really like the home fries but that was personal preference. the over easy eggs were cooked well and the coffee was great.
google avatar

Nique S.

Yelp
A small restaurant with big food. Quiet and cozy. Our 1st time here. The portions are nice sizes. The service was good. Our waitress was rather quiet. She did refill our drinks when they were low and asked if everything was okay. The male waiter was more outgoing and talkative. My bacon was perfect, so I also tipped the cook. It's so hard to find a restaurant where I don't have to send the bacon back. The breakfast burrito was a little too oily for our liking. 8 out of 10... The 2 breakfast meals, 10 out of 10. I would recommend and also go back.
google avatar

Vee W.

Yelp
First time here. Was instantly seated. Was a little small on the inside, our waiter was really nice and attentive. I ordered a regular sausage breakfast and we also got the catfish and grits with the biscuits and gravy. Food wasn't bad they had decent portions. Make sure to go early before the crowd.
google avatar

Staci M.

Yelp
Staff was amazing. Food not so much. Both mine and my partners eggs were way over done. His steak was overdone. Home fries were cold. Coffee was watery. I dragged him here because a long time ago they rocked. Now I won't be going back. Those biscuits and gravy were very good.
google avatar

Tanya B.

Yelp
I got the biscuits and gravy. One extra biscuit with butter. Didn't finish either of them. Way too much flour in the gravy and the biscuits were hard

Michelle B.

Yelp
This place is my favorite breakfast spot the customer service is top tier the food is amazing I really really recommend this spot
google avatar

Yelp
I have been dining at Zeke's on and off for over 20 years when I first started working at Ontario airport. I went there today to meet a good friend and former work colleague. We had lunch and nothing has changed from my first visit here years ago. My fried chicken and waffle was delicious. My friend's burger was as good as ever. The service was very good and with the amount of people dining there at 11:30, its obvious that Zeke's is still a good "eatin' place".
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
Excellent food and service, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone....the ambience is home town type of feeling
google avatar

W U.

Yelp
This place is one of those holes in the wall. Hidden gem. The home fries/country potatoes are very good if you order the man pancake you better be really hungry!!! All dishes that I had here are very tasteful.
google avatar

Mary Catherine D.

Yelp
I was in town for business and I always like to try different restaurants that I do not have back home. I asked someone at the hotel I was staying at where might be a good place to try for breakfast. When she asked me what I liked and I told her chicken and waffles she recommended this place. I consider myself a bit of a snob when it comes to chicken and waffles and I have to admit that, although this food was OK, it definitely did not rank with even some of the average chicken and waffles I have had. The staff was friendly and the price was not bad, however. But if you are like me, and you are picky about your chicken and waffles, this place might not be for you either. The rest of the menu looks OK and I'm sure the other breakfast items would be fine. If I travel back here again and come back to this restaurant I might try something else on the menu, but will likely not give the chicken and waffles another go.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
I've been coming to Zeke's for over 20 years. They're famous for their biscuits and gravy and that's exactly why I keep coming back. I always order the 1/2 order of diced ham and scrambled eggs with hash browns and biscuits & gravy and G.O.P. (Gravy over the Potatoes). It's the perfect amount to fill you up and get your day started. My wife and children get the omelette or the pancakes and waffles which are all equally delicious. You'll most likely leave with a box of leftovers because their portions are huge but even reheated it's all good.
google avatar

Louis C.

Yelp
I have been coming here for over 30 years and I never leave disappointed. This time I took my sister who resides just a few blocks from there. I had the whole side of Hog with sunny side up eggs and my extra crispy hash browns. The service was great and the meal even better now my sister has a new place to take her family & friends. Adios hasta la vista Zeke
google avatar

Luis L.

Yelp
I really love this place due they local flavor and I really recommended but if you are a huge fan of egg Benedict's just make sure to address that they don't fully cooked it because sometimes they completely cook the eggs. Besides that the service and everything else is excellent.
google avatar

Howard G.

Yelp
Always Great. Server is terrific as is the Chili Cheese Omelette ! Looking forward to next time...
google avatar

Debbie G.

Yelp
Service was impeccable. Never had to wait. Long refills on coffee was always filled. All plates came out hot food was hot. Excellent savory I will come back again. Thank you Zeke. It has a very homestyle country type of ambience. I will definitely be back again.

Yelp
This place has always been a "must-have" for breakfast. Well, things have changed. My hubby said it best, "they served us a sub par breakfast!" Total disappointment . We did carry out because we were not in the mood to dine in. When I got there, a bag of food was sitting on the table, closed up in front of the cash register. That was problem #1. There's no telling how long it had been sitting out in the general population without any type of warming situation. That turned me out automatically. Like who does that? Apparently they do. I was ready to get out of there and didn't check for condiments or anything else. Because rule #1 is, if someone orders a waffle, you give them syrup! Another thing that was an epic fail. I live less than 2 miles away from here and once I got home my thoughts came to reality! "Cold, hard, butter less waffle with no syrup!" The meal went to the doghouse immediately! I ordered a 2pc chicken and waffle, no powdered sugar. Simply look at my pics and video and you will see what I got. The hubby ordered the half ham breakfast. Now in the past, the half ham was a very large half of a ham steak. Look at my pics. It looked like a strip of bacon! Terribly dry and uninviting. $28 totally wasted! I'm still hungry. Besides the chilled food I picked up, the taste was gag-able! The meat was dry. My chicken leg tasted like wood and was brick hard. The breast looked like a chicken thigh. Dry as wood. The batter on the chicken tasted like corn meal and flour...more meal-ish than flour-ish. It hurt my heart because yawl know I'm a foodie and my breakfast was a flop! This post-pandemic era we are in doesn't have to be this way! We should be able to still have delightful meals whether it's dine in or take out. This is the only place I've been in that does not have "now hiring" in front of it, so what is actually going on with Zekes? Bring back the pre-covid standards and redeem yourself Zeke. I would love to have faith that this could be what it used to be. 5 star, good quality, hot food with large portions, however, i have my doubts. So with that being said, I will not be returning any time soon.
google avatar

Cheryll R.

Yelp
I tried their buffalo wings for the first time... excellent! The heat was perfect and the were nice and crispy on the outside, just the way I like them.

Tio B.

Yelp
Nice home country feeling, nice size proportions, great taste, efficient service, coffee is great.
google avatar

Cheryl B.

Yelp
Had the Belgian waffle and home fries with the turkey sausage patty and the patty was like burger size. It was excellent the-star was the salsa was excellent. it was so good. It fresh and has a spicy kick. excellent.
google avatar

Rob W.

Yelp
I can't believe I slept on this place so long. Had a 0700 AM meeting cancel so I was in Ontario early. A former colleague recommended this place years ago and I never took his reco seriously. Silly move on my part. Simple, country style decor made me think I was in another state. Now the food. Two eggs medium, 2 sausages, 1/2 order hash browns and a biscuit with country gravy. Eggs done right, sausages were phenomenal for links, hash browns were crispy on the outside and well cooked on the inside, and those biscuits and gravy were plenty enough to enjoy and not too much to result in a nap. Flavor on the gravy was spot on too. Kinda gray in color which I prefer to those restaurants that produce a bright white concoction. Overall, very pleased with my visit. Additionally my food was ready in mere minutes, and the entire breakfast only cost $10.76 with tax. Fantastic value.
google avatar

Christy S.

Yelp
Not gonna lie, I've had this place before and I had HIGH HOPES my second time around... Sausage Egg Omelette$17.84 Choice For Omelette Add-On Bell Pepper $1.20 Onions $1.20 Cheddar Cheese $1.65 Choice of Side Zerks Famous Biscuits and Country Gravy $0.00 THEY GAVE ME NO SAUSAGE!!!! All it was is a crap load of bell peppers and onions. Super
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
The food is good but the pancakes are amazing. I get mine with bananas and whipped cream no syrup needed. There "Mini size" are regular size pancakes. The man sizes ones is enough for 2-3 people. staff is super friendly. We go when ever we are in town. Family friendly place.
google avatar

pat h.

Yelp
This is the first and last time we're going to order food from this place. The food is the worst we've had. I ordered medium rare steak but it was well done and my son ordered chicken fried steak and it was also overcooked. Never again.

Art O.

Yelp
The food was very good, cooked exactly as I requested. The service was excellent, attentive without hovering. I want to go back to try some of the other things on that menu!
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Service was great, really good. Hash browns were good, rest was just really mediocre , and no Heinz ketchup. Can't have hash browns that good without having Heinz.....very convenient to ONT, stopped in Sunday brunch hour for noon flight.
google avatar

Marc H.

Yelp
I ordered the Ortega green chili omelet and it was made perfect !! Not over done or under cooked ! Ortega chili in every bite! And the cheddar cheese was melting hot !! Biscuit and gravey was layered on top of perfect crispy hashbrowns!! Service was a 10 even with the covid rules I'm cant wait to go back again !
google avatar

Tony M.

Yelp
I tried this place one time didn't care for it I figured it's been a while let me give it another chance. I think I'm good now. Maybe it's just me. 20 bucks for an omelet Ihop steak and eggs 100 percent better. Good luck everyone.
google avatar

DareOfficer ..

Yelp
Based on the rude servers and cook, also as a military veteran, it's ok if you don't give military discount. But you'll never get my business.
google avatar

Beatriz M.

Yelp
The staff is rude! I went for the second time recently thinking my experience would be better than the first time. I wanted to give our server the benefit of the doubt thinking maybe she had a bad day. I was wrong!! The second time, we encountered two different servers and they were both just as rude. Safe to say we will not be returning!
google avatar

Andrew V.

Yelp
Great food and huge portions! Having good food is one thing, but having an awesome waitress with positive energy is a huge plus. I wish I got her name but she was serving us 4/8/23 at 10am. Thank you for a great breakfast!

Jamie J.

Yelp
I've been coming to Zekes for decades. My family have experienced ownerships since it's founding owner and the chain of owners that followed. About 2 years ago this happened and I experienced something similar and sad to say this sealed the deal. I am not coming back! Thank goodness the server Victor did a good job trying to remedy the problem but clearly the cook has little regard for customer satisfaction. Originally I ordered my meal asking that my ham be cooked a little more than usual on both sides but it was not as requested. After Victor took it back it came out as though it had been deep fried! Again I send it back this time it appears as though it was simply flatten and served to me again(see for yourself). Although Victor credited my the amount for the ham, the quality of food was still unacceptable. The one sure thing is poor quality will only last so long. Time to find a different breakfast place! I the original owners were still here!
