I was literally down the block grabbing some burgers and parked in front. While I waited for my order a few doors down, I kept noticing customers going into Zeppola and pointing at all of their delectables. Hubby and I were salivating, wondering what they were offering. They have a big front window and we definitely eyed the huge cannoli tower up front. I decided to grab a couple for the road. From outside, I thought they were just a small bakery but in fact, they are actually a café. It looks like serve breakfast and lunch items, as well as many different savory and sweet baked goods.
Edwin was working nonstop. Every so often, a handful of people entered, pointed out some sweets, paid and were off. At this time of night (around 8p on a Thursday), the rest of the café was closed off, so there was no dining in, but if you want something that requires heating up, they will certainly do so for you.
I picked out a few cannoli and saw what looked like a sugar-coated donut with some sort of filling. There was only one and Edwin explained that it was a Pistachio Bombalone, donut-like pastry filled with pistachio crème. I was sold! Pistachio is a favorite flavor of mine. I was soooo happy to have scored the last one. I spied that they also have lattes and ordered one each of the tiramisu and pistachio flavors.
I paid, left and returned to the car. This is my pro tip, and I hate that I sometimes forget when I'm rushing, but definitely make sure to check in BEFORE you purchase anything anywhere, because you could be missing out on discounts and freebies galore! I checked in while back at the car, saw a 15% off disco, and went back in to grab a sandwich that Edwin had previously mentioned was really good. I forgot the name but it might have been a Schiacciata sandwich. It's round and had chicken in it. He offered to heat it up but I declined, and he told me exactly how to set it up when I got home. I ended up gifting it to hubbs for lunch the following day. He was able to heat it up and said it was really good.
I can't say when I'll be back around this way but if I am ever in the neighborhood, I would love to try an avocado toast here. Everything we brought home was really good. The lattes were yummy but the pistachio in particular, tasted a lot like pistachio. I fell in love with that. I heated up the bombolone in the microwave for a few seconds and it was amazing. Everyone had a taste (I was feeling generous). They have other flavors and I definitely want to try the mascapone and custard flavors next. I might have to find a reason to head back to midtown soon.
Big thanks to Edwin and the other employees that made my lattes. They were both really nice and patient with me.
