"Slated to open in 2022 at the base of the Svartisen glacier in northern Meløy municipality with panoramic views over Holandsfjorden, this 99-room, circular hotel is designed by Snøhetta to be highly sustainable and minimally invasive. Elevated above the water on criss-crossing natural wood poles, it features a solar-panel–clad roof intended to make the property energy-positive—generating more energy than it uses and even covering the energy needed for construction—and aims for carbon-neutrality, zero waste, and full off-grid operation within five years. The remote site is only reachable by an energy-neutral boat shuttle from nearby Bodø. On-site amenities include four restaurants offering locally inspired tasting menus (with produce from an on-site sustainable farm) and a 3,300-square-foot indoor-outdoor spa providing traditional Norwegian treatments using locally sourced products." - Sarah Buder
