"Founded in 1886 with a Georgian-revival clubhouse dating to 1926 in the Loop, this civic club near the Art Institute combines historic gravitas (including a sizable art collection with a Monet) with 180 guest rooms and extensive athletic facilities: squash and basketball courts, a Pilates studio, and an indoor lap pool. Since joining the Historic Hotels of America roster in 2021, nonmembers can stay and use the club’s amenities; dining ranges from a casual Carvery with panini and comfort specials to a fine-dining steakroom with an 800-bottle wine cellar. Notable past visitors include Babe Ruth, Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, and Winston Churchill." - Pat Tompkins
