"Why book? An elegant downtown hotel with direct River Walk access and Spanish flair. Set the scene A peaceful retreat after a day of networking or sightseeing, this hotel attracts design-savvy business travelers, snowbirds in sneakers, and the occasional family with kids. The backstory It’s owned by the Houston-based Valencia Group, known for bringing boutique options to major Texas cities as well as smaller, underserved markets like Lubbock and College Station. The hotel underwent a full renovation in 2017, doubling down on the Spanish Colonial style with elegant ironwork, hand-crafted tiles, and a stunning vaulted ceiling reminiscent of a Rioja wine cellar. The rooms Soft linens and plush carpets are juxtaposed against exposed concrete and metal bedframes. Bathrooms are on the smaller side but well-appointed with C.O. Bigelow products. For a more serene stay, opt for a courtyard room over those facing the River Walk—unless you’re traveling in December when the giant Cypress trees are all lit up with Christmas lights. Food and drink Dorrego’s, named for the famed Plaza Dorrego in Buenos Aires, boasts piping hot empanadas and a wine list anchored by Argentinian reds. Call ahead to inquire about the off-menu tomahawk steak. It’s not always available, but when it is, dinner is an easy decision. The neighborhood/area It’s a straight shot down Houston Street to the Alamo and the hotel is within walking distance of several bars and three major entertainment venues, including the awe-inspiring Majestic Theater. The famed water taxis also stop right next to the hotel, making it easy to explore farther afield. The service The front desk staff is welcoming and the valet service is speedy (just don’t be surprised by the $45 a day charge—that’s standard downtown.) Accessibility ADA standards are met and they make a real effort to ensure their website is accessible, too. Anything left to mention? Keep an eye out for design “Easter eggs” like the historic map of San Antonio painted on the spines of the books in the library and the case of glass oranges signed by celebrity guests." - Tommie Ethington
