"Why is this place so notable? Midhope Castle is the filming location used for Lallybroch—AKA Jamie Fraser’s home—in the hugely popular Outlander show. It dates back to 1458 (perhaps earlier) and although its exterior appears to be in good condition, the interior is derelict. The castle sits on the grounds of Hopetoun House. Before you leave, pick up some local produce from the delightful farm shop, including meat raised on the estate’s own grounds. Wow. What’s the vibe among visitors? Nerdish curiosity. Go figure. Anything we should know about the logistics of visiting? There's no guide, but you have to obtain a pass from Hopetoun House to visit the castle, which is positioned on active farming land. And who are the usual visitors? Outlander fans as well as folks visiting Hopetoun House. So we've probably seen it on TV—how is it in real life? If you’ve seen the castle in Outlander, you’ll love seeing it for real. The fact that the interior is derelict is a bit disappointing—but, hey, that’s show business. Got it. So who will get the most out of it? If you haven’t seen this castle in Outlander, you might wonder why you’re here, not to mention paying a £10 parking fee.
