What's the backstory?An independent luxury hotel set on 12 acres, The Umstead sits next to the corporate campus of SAS, an analytics software company, and it happens to be owned by the founder of SAS. Proximity to this bustling campus (as well as convenience from the highway) makes it a draw for business travelers and blushing brides alike. Tell us about your room.Staying at The Umstead is like staying in a forest glade; the rooms overlook a beautiful natural setting and have soft carpeting, even softer bedding, and a spa-style bathroom. What's the restaurant like?Heron's is a destination for anniversaries or other milestones. The tasting menus these days are driven by chef Steven Devereaux Greene, who pulls inspiration from the hotel's farm and art. Greene pairs Asian and Southern flavors (he ran the kitchen at An before taking this job) with textural play. How did you find the service?The service was seamless and anticipatory. Return to your room, your electronic cords are untangled and tidy; arrive at the spa, and a particular glass of wine you enjoyed at dinner the night before is waiting; the concierge not only remembers the name of your pup (yes, The Umstead is dog-friendly) but his favorite toy, too. Who stays here?Mothers and daughters having lunch, couples, and business people, smiling as they pass one another on the running tails, or sipping fruit water while waiting to be called for a spa treatment. How's the neighborhood?The hotel, a retreat more than a convenience, is a bit interesting to find in the midst of such a bustling, trafficky, business-y area.
