"We're rolling up in the taxi. What's the first impression?Set in a sweet spot between trendy Yorkville and the funky Annex, right near the University of Toronto campus and a short walk from several top museums, a former Holiday Inn now houses the only Kimpton hotel in Canada. Not that you can see any evidence of the previous tenant; thanks to an extensive overhaul of the existing footprint, the property now features dark woods, rich textures, and mid-century-inspired furnishings. There also are lots of creative touches and works by local artists, including the giant exterior owl mural (by the street artist Birdo), the painted panels of woodland landscapes adorning the lobby, and the individual works hanging in the guest rooms. The lobby has a cozy lounge that's equipped with a small fireplace and cushy seating, as well as complimentary coffee and tea in the morning. Who are our fellow travelers?The brand-new hotel is still finding its regulars. So far, though, the crowd has consisted of international business and leisure travelers who appreciate the convenient location, Kimpton/IHG rewards junkies, University of Toronto parents, and the occasional family with young kids. Overall, the clientele skews young—lots of 20- and 30-somethings. Once we're inside, how quickly can we get to our rooms and kick off our shoes?Checking in and out is a breeze, thanks to an on-point staff; there's always someone standing ready to open the front doors, help with luggage, spot your Uber, or offer neighborhood tips. Up the elevator, down the hall—what's the room like?The 188 rooms are chic, with muted colors, sleek brass accents, quirky artwork, great beds dressed in Frette linens, and stylish furniture custom-designed by Toronto-based Mason Studio and crafted by local artisans. As with most Kimptons, there are armoires instead of closets; the ones here are stocked with extra-soft robes, yoga mats, and—as a playful touch—a sculpture of an albino squirrel, a nod to the city's famous park residents. Some rooms have views of Bloor Street; others, of the Casa Loma estate and beyond. Higher-category suites have perks like dining and areas, bathtubs, and record players with a stash of LPs by Canadian artists. Bathrooms tend to be on the smaller side, but have spacious walk-in showers and Atelier Bloem products. Any other amenities to note?WiFi is free, and rooms are stocked with super-powerful (and stylish) Bluetooth speakers instead of iPod docks or alarm clocks. Mini-bars offer standard snacks and premium booze; higher-tier IHG loyalty members get a $15 credit toward mini-bar goodies. Most importantly, how's the food?Kimpton's new restaurant has managed to keep some of the most beloved elements of its Holiday Inn predecessor, including its approachable neighborhood vibe and its popular karaoke nights. The revamped space has a range of seating areas: a cozy, library-style alcove, high-tops by the window, spots around a big-screen TV, and a large, curved bar. An all-day menu focuses on elevated gastropub food—standouts include pickled onion rings, thin-crust pizzas, chicken pot pie, and pork schnitzel—and the bar pours wines, craft beers, and great cocktails. And the service?The bellhops and door staff are always quick to help you out of a car or point you toward a great neighborhood restaurant. After checkout, what's likely to stick with us on the journey home?There's a small gym and several lovely meeting and event spaces, including one that hosts a complimentary evening wine hour—a Kimpton signature.
