White Swan Inn

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? A four-story Victorian with ornate window detailing, striped awnings, and a gleaming white marble façade, the White Swan Inn cuts a fine figure in Lower Nob Hill. Step through the front doors into the lobby, and you’ll enter a cornucopia of colors and textures. What's the backstory? The 26-room boutique hotel was devised as a celebration of all things British, and has a playful country manor-meets-The Clash vibe. The design was collaboration between designer Regina Perez Montemayor, art expert Julie Coyle, and Andrew Alford (behind the Graduate Hotels). Alford’s personal mission—to “fight a war against beige” could be the credo for this visually stunning property, where pop art hangs atop floral wallpaper, and the overstuffed chairs come in an explosion of patterns. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? This is a 1914 building, and the rooms feel aptly old-school, with picture railings, crystal doorknobs, and fire escapes. Every room has its own working fireplace (controllable via a switch next to the bed!), along with a sitting area and a selection of hardcover books. The bathrooms were renovated last year, and each one features either a walk-in shower or a deep soaking tub. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? WiFi is complimentary. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? In true B&B style, the inn will provide morning breakfast and evening wine, all you have to do is ask. (Naturally, the scones are stand-out, and there are a dozen tea options!) For dinner, the White Swan has partnered with Del Popolo—the red-hot eatery next door, known for their wood-fired pizzas—to provide room service. And the service? Scavenger hunt enthusiasts, rejoice! Upon request, the front desk will give you a White Swan Treasure Hunt: a city map marked with locations to find and photograph. (Some spots are well-known, others hidden treasures.) Snap enough photos, and you can win a prize. What type of travelers will you find here? The White Swan is popular for celebrations—birthdays, engagements, and honeymoons. Is there anything you'd change? Nope. Any other hotel features worth noting? Don’t miss the inn’s public spaces, downstairs. The massive parlor is the heart of the place: the lush living room you always wished you had. Outside, a beautiful courtyard beckons those looking for a quiet place to read, lounge, or dine al fresco. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? Most definitely! It’s a lovely, relaxing spot, conveniently located just a short walk from both Union Square and Nob Hill." - Megan McCrea
