Wangz Hotel

"How did it strike you on arrival? This modern cylindrical, family-run hotel stands out in the middle of the low-rise Tiong Bahru heritage precinct. The lobby is compact but chic, with a recently refurbished designer lounge that’s open to the public for drinks. A short flight of stairs leads to the building’s only elevator that goes to the rooms. The overall effect is cosy and unintimidating. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Business travelers, flashpackers, hip young couples. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.A Deluxe Room. It was a decent size (118-square-feet) with large windows. I wasn’t expecting much from a small, mid-priced local property, but there were more than a few luxe touches including designer chairs, a pillow menu and a Handy phone. Loved the soft curve of the walls – the cylindrical shape of the building has a surprisingly soothing effect on the room interiors. Guests get free international calls to four designated countries. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The bed was comfy and had great support; pillows were oversized and could be too high for some. It’s worth noting that the room wasn’t completely soundproof so there was some traffic noise from the road below. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? The mini-bar came with free soft drinks and juices, replenished daily. Fairly standard selection though. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Spacious asymmetrical bathroom with lush and large rain shower, plus a view of the Singapore cityscape through a glass panel. The hip bath and body products were Atelier Bloem by Malin+Goetz. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Faultless and free. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.Upper Place, the rooftop restaurant is a great place for dinner and drinks at sunset. Parking is limited – only nine spots. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? The unique configuration of the room and sundowners at Upper Place. Bottom line: worth it, and why? It’s an almost-perfect storm of quality accommodations, buzzy surroundings (Tiong Bahru is hawker fare heaven) and affordable rates." - Audrey Phoon
