"The large Chihuly sculpture in the foyer—with its cobalt and iridescent glass tendrils—gets 'em in the door, but visitors who know Charlotte will know that the Mint Museum is grand beyond its opening act. The Uptown arm of the institution on Randolph Road, the new, beautifully modern 145,000-square-foot location, houses a staggering collection of crafts and design, plus international and American art. There's also an abundance of artifacts, from an impressive collection of 18th-century British ceramics to paintings, fashion, and collage. Despite the foot traffic, special events, school groups, and fellow travelers, there's still plenty of breathing room. If you're looking for a little more quiet, come after 2 p.m. during the week, and avoid Friday at lunchtime." - Stephanie Burt
