The rooms There are 31 thoughtfully designed rooms and suites featuring pillow-top queen or king beds, organic toiletries from local producer Munkholm, marble bathrooms, and complimentary WiFi. The muted color palette of velvety grays, pink creams, and earthy browns are perfectly dispersed throughout the spaces to give rooms a calming and peaceful vibe. My room also included a delightful soaking tub that was the perfect antidote to walking around the city for hours every day. Room tip: If you’re looking to spread out a bit and snag a little outdoor space, book one of the suites featuring a separate living room area and sitting balcony perfect for sipping a glass of wine before heading to dinner. Food and drink Even if you don’t stay at The Socialist, make a reservation at Bobo Food Studio and plan to dedicate an evening drinking and eating your way through an incredible dining experience. Start with cocktails at the impressive art installation also known as the bar: A beautiful focal point of the property, its sleek, industrial design is backlit by a towering shelf of liquor, and the entire space feels dwarfed by massive branches jutting out in every direction above your head. From your seat at the bar, sneak generous peeks into the open kitchen as you decide what to order. My advice: Let the bar chef, Asgeir Björnsson, guide you. A legendary bartender from Iceland with history in New York and London, his experimental approach to cocktails will take your taste buds on a journey like no drink has before. Asgeir’s primal mastery of his work is respectable, yet, the man behind the craft—often in a relaxed, patterned shirt and rocking a mullet that can truly only be described as stylish—makes the experience even better. Be sure to take your time at the bar to have more than one cocktail and take in the unique flavors and presentation. Save room for an equally majestic culinary journey by treating yourself to the team’s Food Experience tasting menu: It includes nine modern Danish dishes tailored by chef Ásgeir Sonur Jóns (yes, same first name as the bar chef) where you’ll drool over grilled octopus served with corn purée and grilled peas, grilled scallops with brown butter, and homemade coconut ice cream topped with caviar. If meat isn’t your thing, full vegetarian and vegan versions of the tasting menu are also available. But whatever version you order, chef Jóns' passion and skill will ensure you leave having had one of the best meals of your life. The neighborhood/area You can’t beat the location of the property, and it serves as the perfect jumping off point for all your Copenhagen adventures. You’re only a 10-minute walk to Nyhavn, the postcard canal view featuring brightly colored 17th- and early 18th-century townhouses, a 16-minute walk to Designmuseum Denmark, the must-see museum capturing Denmark’s rich and influential design legacy, and a 13-minute walk to Tivoli Gardens, an amusement park and playground of wonder. Looking to explore even further? No problem as the city’s efficient metro system is just a two minute stroll away. The service The service is effortlessly cool and attentive, without any stuffy pompousness. The staff feel like the cool kid in school—but not the cocky jock, but the one that says hi to everyone. General Manager Wictor Lidholm's smile and warmth are contagious; Wictor greeted us in person at both check-in and check-out, perfect bookends to our stay that really delivered on the essence of hospitality without suffocating. For families While the friendly staff and spacious suites are certainly hospitable to families, the hotel’s vibrant intersection of artists and urban creatives make it better suited for adults. Anything left to mention? Four-legged friends are welcome. If it makes you anxious to leave your pet behind—or you just love their company—The Socialist is happy to accommodate.
