The Omni King Edward Hotel

"How did it strike you on arrival?Toronto’s first luxury hotel also feels like one of its newest, thanks to a $40 million renovation that brought the icon into the 21st century while honoring the history that’s made it such a favorite. Originally built in 1903, the King Edward has hosted all manner of boldface names in its convenient downtown location, which is located close to the financial and entertainment districts, and attractions like the Eaton Centre and St. Lawrence Farmers Market. Past the elegant brick exterior, a re-done lobby has bold-colored, comfy seating, light-wood paneling, a fireplace, and quirky touches like towering sculptures of chess pieces. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Luxury lovers, fans of historic hotels, corporate types making use of the extensive meeting and event spaces, and locals lingering in the Consort Bar. The rooms have been remodeled, you say? What's new? While wingback chairs, tufted leather headboards, deep red accent walls, and throw pillows emblazoned with crowns all nod to the hotel's regal name and deep heritage, the 301 newly redone rooms are now fully outfitted with modern touches like HDTVs, iPod docking stations, Keurig coffee machines, work desks, and laptop-size safes. Premium linens top the king-size beds; bathrooms have showers or soaking tubs. Suites have separate living rooms, additional bathrooms, and other extras; the Royal Suite has a sunken lounge, a 12-seat dining table, a kitchenette, and two fireplaces. We love a perk like a fireplace. What are the highlights here?Twenty-nine rooms and suites have access to the new Royal Club Lounge, which serves complimentary breakfast and bites throughout the day, and enjoy other things like nightly turndown, free wifi, and a morning car service. How's the dining? With rich décor reminiscent of an English aristocrat’s private club, the newly renovated Consort Bar serves light lunch and dinner, cocktails, and wine. The afternoon tea (Friday to Sunday) at Victoria's Restaurant, meanwhile, has been a tradition for more than a century—there's even a version just for kids. And there's an indulgent Sunday brunch buffet—everything from beef Wellington to homemade pastries—in the gorgeous Sovereign Ballroom. We're on vacation, but say we want to fit in a workout—what will we find?A gym is outfitted with Precor machines and a yoga and stretching area, and a spa and hair salon on the mezzanine level. Fresh off a $6.5 million renovation, the Crystal Ballroom has emerged as one of Toronto's best event venues, thanks to ornate moldings and large windows offering city views. Bottom line: sum up the experience at the King Edward.Partake in Torontonian history—without sacrificing modern creature comforts—at this renovated grande dame." - Sandra Ramani
