"Opening Thursday, February 23 at 952 Merrimon Avenue, Little D’s is the McGlynns’ intimate, 40-seat neighborhood restaurant named for their 8-year-old daughter Davis; I found the single-room layout with an L-shaped bar deliberately snug and cozy, featuring muted blue-and-green wainscoting, botanical wallpaper, softly curved velvet chairs, a caramel-leather banquette and stools, and a polished concrete floor and pewter ceiling that enclose diners while the kitchen sits out of sight in the rear. The menu is a departure from Proper — smaller, shareable plates with a stronger emphasis on vegetables reflecting the current winter-to-spring transition (kale, squash, carrots, potatoes now; lettuce, peas, asparagus, ramps and nettles as spring arrives) alongside mains of beef, pork, fowl, fish and a vegetarian option. Produce is local but the finished dishes are global in flavor: grilled broccolini with cardamom labneh and pistachio dukkah; caramelized cauliflower with raisins and vadouvan aioli; charred carrots with smoked feta, toasted peanuts, harissa and cilantro. Pastry chef Hilary Lamont oversees desserts, the kid’s menu swaps chicken tenders for duck, steak or mahi mahi, and the beverage program is cocktail-forward with batched “elevated classics” and sophisticated non-alcoholic options. Little D’s is dinner-only and closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, positioned in North Asheville for easier parking while remaining a straight shot from downtown." - Kay West
