"Perched atop the AC Hotel San Rafael, this new rooftop — the first in San Rafael — opened on August 2 and offers an al fresco perch with sweeping North Bay views. The seasonally rotating small-plates menu starts with just over a dozen shareable items, including warm Marcona almonds scented with rosemary, roasted carrot hummus served with vegetables and flatbread, and a grilled cheese made with Bordenave’s sourdough and Point Reyes Toma; seafood offerings include chilled or baked oysters, Dungeness crab, and a sea bass crudo, while meatier plates feature Petaluma chicken souvlaki and a grilled steak crostini. The beverage program features nine cocktails (including a lemongrass mojito, the Pen Pal — rye, vermouth, and Aperol — a gin-based Greener Pastures with aloe liqueur, lime, and basil, and the bubbly Red Zeppelin with vodka, Chambord, peach, lemon, and sparkling wine), a lengthy selection of California and French wines with 14 options by the glass, and a spirit list highlighting pours from Evan Williams Black Label up to Macallan 25 Year. Above Fifth is open Wednesday through Sunday from 3 to 11 p.m., plans to add Saturday and Sunday brunch service, and posts updates on the hotel’s Instagram." - Lauren Saria
