"I'm thrilled Big Daddy’s Kick’n Chicken returned to South LA on January 5 after fourteen years off the map; it's a triumphant rebound for owner and former stockbroker Ron McCan, who first introduced his charbroiled chicken to Los Angeles in 2000. At its peak he operated multiple locations—Seventh and Slauson, Washington and La Brea, Sepulveda and Van Nuys, and Panorama City—but a 2005 fire at the flagship Slauson spot led him to close the restaurants and focus on raising his family. Urged on by loyal customers and his son, McCan ran a pop-up on Eighth and Slauson last April that convinced him to reopen, and he found a new Nutwood location in November only blocks from the soon-to-be NFL stadium. The menu is straightforward: charbroiled chicken with a choice of macaroni and cheese, collard greens, yams, red beans and rice, corn, or string beans, and each plate comes with a piece of cornbread. For now hours are 11 a.m. to midnight, but he plans to serve until 3 a.m. when fully staffed to meet late-night demand from the adjacent Savoy center’s frequent events. McCan welcomes customers calling him Big Daddy—a nickname born when a friend took one bite and declared, "this chicken is kicking big daddy." - Mona Holmes
