"For decades a spangly sign reading “Tad’s Broiled Steaks” beckoned potential Union Square diners to enter, and I remember it being described by Eater in 2014 as “rough-and-tumble” and “honkytonk.” Part of what was once a 28-location chain, the 60-plus-year-old Tad's operated at 120 Powell Street but announced in fall 2017 that it would close and reopen the next March at 44 Ellis Street; that move repeatedly stalled and the Powell spot lingered as every other location in the chain shuttered. The San Francisco spot closed on October 14, 2019 and promised to reopen the following month—another promise that didn't materialize—prompting slews of disappointed Facebook comments from diners (one wrote she flew home after two weeks in SF expecting it to be open). Per Hoodline, “undisclosed delays” held up the Ellis Street move, but the restaurant is now poised to reopen at some point in March with tourist-friendly additions like all-day breakfast, a full bar, and its spangly sign back in place, where it will again serve “top quality meals at value prices.”" - Eve Batey
