"Located across the Friendly Confines inside the Hotel Zachary, Steingold’s Bagels & Nosh opened its doors on July 11 in the 1,200-square-foot former home of West Town Bakery, fulfilling Aaron Steingold’s long-term goal of operating closer to Wrigley Field. Steingold leans into nostalgia and the longstanding romance between American Jews and baseball, aiming to balance deli tradition with modern touches: staples include hot pastrami on rye, latkes, bagels in bulk and the number-one seller, classic bagel and lox, while newer items include The Traditional build-your-own sandwich, customizable breakfast sandwiches featuring culinary director Cara Peterson’s red lentil patties, and permanent Vienna Beef bagel dogs served with brown mustard. For the first time the shop offers gluten-free bagels from Original Sunshine and several vegetarian open-faced bagel sandwiches, and the drink menu—designed by operations director Sean Courtney—features about a dozen mostly local drafts, “easy-drinking” wines and rotating boozy slushies like a frozen watermelon limonada, with plans for deli-inspired winter drinks such as an egg-cream twist; the deli will also launch knock-and-drop service to deliver smoked fish platters and more to hotel guests. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m." - Naomi Waxman
