"Walking up to the window at Highland Park’s Penny’s Burgers feels like entering a time machine, with all the charm of an old-school burger joint and affordable prices. The classic cheeseburger immediately caught my eye and catapulted me back to childhood afternoons at Fatburger; in an age where smash burgers are everywhere, a medium-thick patty with grill marks felt like a welcome change. While there are a few seats on the patio, the interior is the better choice on a hot day: well-worn but clean vinyl booths and a cut-out window into the kitchen. My burger came out quickly and larger than expected, the bun soft and fresh and the lettuce crisp. The fries were almost too hot to touch and nearly scalded me on the first bite, though the reward far outweighed the risk. I’ll be back the next time I’m craving a hit of nostalgia." - Eater Staff
