First Lady Jill Biden Visited Homegirl Cafe During Her Second Official LA Visit | Eater LA

"I note that Homeboy Industries, founded in 1992 by Father Greg Boyle, provides support, training, and resources for former gang members and those who were previously incarcerated; its bakery and catering operation supplies prepared food — including a popular cinnamon coffee cake — to restaurants throughout Los Angeles, provides home-delivered meals for those in need, and sells goods at Homeboy Farmers Markets, Homeboy Diner, and Homegirl Catering. The organization is roughly 90 percent privately funded but received a $2 million growth opportunity grant from the U.S. Department of Labor in June, and during Dr. Biden’s visit she toured the facilities and joined a roundtable discussion with former participants, soon-to-be UCLA graduate liaison Johanna Carbajal, Eugene Walker (manager for tattoo removal), Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti, and supervisor Hilda Solis." - Mona Holmes
