"This arena hosted two voting sessions where about 25,000 of the union's roughly 50,000 members came to vote, with 99% authorizing a strike; the authorization permits the negotiating committee to call a strike any time after June 1 and is intended mainly to give leverage in contract talks rather than immediately trigger a citywide stoppage. Contracts at 34 Strip and Downtown resorts expire on June 1, and while one major operator expects to sign before the deadline, union leaders say a strike would be a last resort even as members — including bartenders, guest room attendants, cocktail and food servers, porters, bellmen, cooks and other kitchen workers — prepare if agreements are not reached. The last citywide Las Vegas strike in 1984 affected 32 resorts and lasted 67 days." - Susan Stapleton
