"Founded in 1841 and located on a 375-acre campus in the Syracuse suburb of Geddes, I found the fair to be a model of the state-fair tradition—an 18-day August–September spectacle (this year Aug. 20–Sept. 6) easily reached by car, train, or bus, with concerts on two stages (including free shows by Nelly, Third Eye Blind, Melissa Etheridge, and Sheena Easton), carnival rides, unexpected exhibits (one gallery devoted to dozens of miniature circus models), and even on-site COVID vaccination and testing; admission was a shockingly low $3 a day (parking $5), attendance was down so I could mask up and avoid crowds, and food remained its most enticing aspect." - Robert Sietsema
