"At 2373 Chestnut Street (between Divisadero and Scott, in the former Mezes space), Howell's is a new bi-level wine bar where Nate Welch is pouring from his own wine list during a soft opening ahead of a grand opening on March 29. Investor Beth Weesner says Howell's has its own unique character—"We share a wall with Cultivar, but it’s a completely different vibe"—and the team is aiming for a unique blend of aesthetics with really good food and great wine at good prices. Chef Sarah Galloway (Stones Throw, Spruce) is currently honing Howell's food menu. The upstairs offers table service and is the best spot for a full sit-down meal, while guests can also mingle and order food at the bar; the rustic wood bar was built by Welch’s father‑in‑law as part of a group-driven decor effort. The owners spent six months fitting out the space with nine investors backing Welch’s solo venture, and they are still polishing an outdoor space behind Howell's with an eye toward serving brunch there." - Caleb Pershan
