Ferndale Vegan Restaurant Greenspace Cafe Closes on February 1 - Eater Detroit

"High-end vegan restaurant Greenspace Cafe will shut its doors in Ferndale on Saturday, February 1 after four years of business. The restaurant operated by the family of Doctor Joel Kahn, a cardiologist and clean eating guru, announced the decision on Sunday, January 19 in a post to Facebook. Issues with our landlord, leases, and finances have left no options, the restaurant management writes in the statement. We are deeply grateful to our amazing staff over these years, current and past, and our amazing customers. Alas, the healthy plant food market is still tiny even if vibrant and growing. The ambitious vegan restaurant debuted in fall 2015, with a juice bar, cocktails, and items like nut cheese boards and farro-lentil burgers. It’s buzzy opening proved tough competition for other longtime neighborhood vegetarian destinations like Om Cafe, which closed in 2018. The business went through numerous changes during its residency on Nine Mile, including the brief appointment of Cacao Tree’s Amber Poupore as executive chef in 2018.
