"In the Tenderloin I noticed Emperor Norton’s Boozeland is displaying a framed promissory note allegedly signed February 18, 1878 by Emperor Norton; owner Kevin DeMattia says he bought it sight unseen and sans authentication, and an expert says it might be legitimate and could be worth as much as $15,000, although Norton died in 1880 so he wouldn’t have made good on the 50-cent promise. I also observed that the bar now takes credit cards, has a spacious layout with a big smoking patio, is doggie-friendly, and offers pool, shuffleboard and video games; they claim the city’s longest Happy Hour (Noon–7pm, Mon–Fri) and even have Pliny the Elder on draft." - Eve Batey
