"Debuting at the Ferry Building on Thursday, July 11, Ocean Malasada brings Hawaiian treats—malasadas, a Portuguese-style doughnut introduced to Hawai‘i by workers from the Azores and Madeira in the 19th century—to a kiosk at 1 Ferry Building, Suite K1. Owner Randy Santos infuses Filipino and Hawaiian flavors into the yeast-leavened dough enriched with eggs, butter, and milk, offering ube and passionfruit varieties as well as guava and haupia (coconut pudding) flavors and a traditional version. The business began out of Randy and Dee Santos's home in 2016 and grew through pop-ups and events, including briefly selling at Off the Grid in Fort Mason in 2020 before the pandemic; they adapted with curbside pickup from a Daly City commissary and a take-home malasada kit during the 2020 holidays, then collaborated with Far From Paradise Cafe (since rebranded as Pineapples) to bring malasadas to the Excelsior in June 2023 before ending that partnership this past April. The kiosk will be open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday." - Dianne de Guzman
