"Opened in 1986, Vito’s and Son proves particularly adept at Jersey-themed sandwiches: I tried the Hoboken, a vegetarian hero layering fresh mozzarella (known locally as “mutz”) with roasted red peppers, pickled artichokes, and eggplant, finished with pesto and a second dressing (I chose Kalamata olive spread, which complemented the pesto); don’t miss the famous roast beef hero, a gloppy combo of rare meat, mutz, and brown gravy. Like Fiore’s, Vito’s depends on squeakingly fresh, in-house mozzarella, posts daily specials online, and turns out gigantic heroes that can easily feed two." - Robert Sietsema
