"At the edge of the Tenderloin and Nob Hill, Kinara Fusion has become a busy, expanded spot since it reopened last year, even taking over the space next door. Shahil Patel and his four brothers deliver inventive South Asian flavors that balance tradition and innovation, and the Bollywood-themed decor—bright neon signs and a mural of Shah Rukh Khan—has made the restaurant social-media friendly and earned features on Check, Please Bay Area and numerous viral TikTok and Instagram videos. The real star is their Chicken 69, the brothers' riff on the Chennai-origin Chicken 65 (legends say it was invented in 1965 or uses 65 spices): halal and hand-slaughtered, with masala prepared in-house, it arrives as a heaping appetizer of fire-red marinated chicken thigh pieces on a bed of sliced cabbage, garnished with fresh coriander and a lemon wedge. The chicken has a very light, crispy exterior yet is so tender and juicy you can cut it with a spoon, and the flavor is front-loaded with a complex sweet-and-sour tang followed by a sobering punch of heat that likely comes from red chilis. I also enjoyed that the menu mixes traditional Indian and Pakistani dishes like samosa chaat and chicken boti with the Indian-fusion pizzas that started the business, plus a decadent non-alcoholic drink list that complements the halal-friendly menu—just be sure to order the Chicken 69 with a mango lassi." - Antony Fangary
