"Set to replace a short-lived Woodbridge izakaya at the corner of Trumbull Avenue and Putnam Street, this new project is being launched by the partners behind a well-regarded Canton izakaya and aims to be the first of a small chain of four to five pub-style Japanese restaurants. The owners are investing heavily to retool the former kitchen—about $100,000 in equipment including two fryers—and are adding visible signage and a front entrance on Trumbull rather than the previous hidden alleyway. The dining room will largely retain its tatami-style, shoes-off seating but will gain back-supported seats for comfort; a patio with a beergarden component is planned for spring. The menu will focus on 100–150 small, tapas-style dishes and a selection of Japanese craft beers, with highlights such as Japanese plum–infused jellyfish, takoyaki (battered octopus street food), and fresh sashimi brought in by chef James Kim. The partners also plan a large tuna-style festival event to mark the opening, which they hope can occur by Friday, November 15." - Brenna Houck
