"Founded in 1962 by Joe and Paula Avila and now run by their granddaughter Regina Estrada, this historic Mexican bakery is a pillar of East Austin with a very old-school vibe and a James Beard Foundation America’s Classics honor in 2023. Open for breakfast and lunch, the daytime menu is notable for tender, juicy barbacoa, excellent migas, and hearty lunch tacos such as chicken and beef picadillo served with a choice of flour, corn, or crispy shells, plus rice and beans. A rotating $12 daily special (Tuesday–Friday) with tea is a standout value. The spot also serves as a community hub: staff and ownership are active in local advocacy, voter registration, and conversations about neighborhood change and rising taco prices, and diners can sit beside the tempting bakery case or at outside tables." - Nadia Chaudhury
