"A store in Philadelphia drew nationwide outrage when two Black men were arrested for using the space without paying, sparking protests and a reexamination of when staff should involve law enforcement. In response, the company announced new guidance (updated May 21, 2018) that outlines eight examples of when employees should call 911 and provides broader rules for handling “disruptive behavior” — citing behaviors such as being unreasonably noisy, viewing inappropriate media, verbal abuse, unwanted sexual advances and indecent exposure. Company spokespeople acknowledged that expectations varied from store to store, that the police should not have been called in that case, and that the chain is revising its practices and temporarily closed more than 8,000 U.S. locations for mandatory racial-bias training to make stores safer and more welcoming for everyone." - Brenna Houck
