"At 11806 North Lamar Boulevard, Smokin Beauty — a North Austin Vietnamese-Texas barbecue restaurant co-owned by Thao Phan and Matt Roth — is closing, with its last day of service on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2023. I note that they opened Smokin in August 2020 after operating the Ted’s Farm food truck, and the menu featured sandwiches and banh mi with barbecued meats as well as cocktails. The owners said the concept was “a labor-intense process requiring a lot of people in the kitchen,” and that with rising labor and food costs, “after paying payroll plus the bills, there really isn’t anything leftover,” which led them to close and pivot to a simpler operation while keeping the location." - Nadia Chaudhury
