"Led by chef Julio Zapata, who brings more than 20 years of sushi experience from Ijji Sushi, Ebisu, Daigo and Sushi Ran, this new SoMa restaurant is taking over the former Ruchi’s space and is expected to open in about two weeks. Zapata has partnered with friends Wendy C. Yeomans and Emma J.Y. Carpio and his wife Alba Zapata to create a welcoming, approachable Japanese spot that serves both omakase lovers and families; the menu will feature seasonal fish, rolls priced around $15, udon, small plates and aged steaks, with most recipes hewing close to Japanese tradition. The 49-seat dining room—including an 18-seat sushi bar and lots of wood—is designed to feel comfortable and unpretentious, and the drinks program will include sake and beer imported from Japan, Napa Valley wines and soju cocktails. Carpio emphasizes they don't want it to feel high-end or intimidating, intend to keep it affordable, and will serve lunch and dinner daily." - Janelle Bitker
