"Passersby on Mission Street might mistake the new cooking school and pop-up venue at 2961 Mission Street for a hip bookstore; I was struck by 20 feet of bookshelves stocked with cookbooks. Beyond that library sits a long communal dining table and a large, open classroom kitchen with professional appliances that accommodates 12 to 14 students and doubles as a space for private dinners and pop-up restaurants. Technically permitted as a restaurant with a beer-and-wine license, the school offers online sign-ups for one-off classes and longer courses — including knife skills, food-and-wine pairing, pickling and fermentation — and early offerings such as chef Agustín Gaytán’s tamales class. The roster already includes notable instructors like Greg Dunmore, Lindsay West, and Sasha Crehan, with co-owner Jen Nurse serving as lead instructor; Nurse, who attended pastry school in Seattle and taught at Tante Marie’s, is especially intent on teaching young people and is coordinating with Mission District organizations to bring local kids into the kitchen. Her classes avoid competition, instead culminating in collaborative group meals, and classes begin January 13 with a community open house on January 21." - Caleb Pershan
