"After Mary O’Halloran’s Humans of New York Instagram post about her fight to keep the decade-old East Village pub afloat while caring for and homeschooling her six children—who occasionally helped in the kitchen—Humans of New York founder Brandon Stanton urged his 11 million followers to support the bar in person and by ordering boxes of soda bread online; as of August 7 the pub had taken more than 25,000 orders (over 150,000 scones) translating to more than $1 million in sales. The bar had been struggling through the pandemic despite catering dinners for emergency workers and selling boxes of soda bread, and O’Halloran says, “It felt like the walls were closing in,” until regulars helped run errands and set up the online shop that later handled the surge in orders." - Luke Fortney
