"After a pandemic shutdown, I’m glad to see Waystone — the once-popular mid-Market wine bar — back in fighting shape with a new North Beach home at the former Barrio spot on Powell and Green (1609 Powell Street). Chef and co-owner Billy Riordan is leading the food program, returning classics such as the braised beef sandwich, the shrimp salad sandwich, and the Ploughman’s Board — Waystone’s take on a British field-worker charcuterie featuring pickled veggies, cheese, cured meat, soft-boiled eggs, and bread — while introducing potential new favorites like achiote baby back ribs and a shareable whipped feta dip with crudites; weekly specials will include dishes such as an herbed mussel with rosemary fries. Co-owner Tom Patella curates an extensive wine list with an emphasis on California and France, four wines on tap and 22 by the glass, plus planned public and private tastings with winemakers and educators, and a hearty beer selection that highlights four local taps (including Standard Deviant Brewing and North Coast Brewing) alongside Belgian-style beers, sours, IPAs, and more by bottle or can. The new space, redesigned with Skiff Made, moves away from the old modern concrete vibe with custom wine shelves and glowing paper lanterns across the ceiling, and it will double as an art gallery featuring local artists on a quarterly rotation with opening parties — Elliott Nathan kicks off the series on May 18. Waystone debuted April 21 and will be open 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday." - Dianne de Guzman
