"The Whig, located at 1200 Main Street in Columbia, South Carolina, has been a haven for PBR drinkers and free thinkers for 17 years. The underground bar is set to close this year as its building has changed ownership and will undergo new construction. Opened in 2005 by owners Dino Pournaras and Jonathan Robinson, the Whig became known as a chill place to grab a cheap beer and enjoy really good bar food. It served as an antithesis to the conservative state politics, with regulars even playing a role in the removal of the Confederate flag from state grounds. The closure date is not yet confirmed, but patrons are encouraged to enjoy the unique decor and popular tater tots before it shuts down." - Erin Perkins
