"One of the city’s longest-running, family-owned restaurants, Original Hoffbrau Steakhouse is temporarily closed as of Sunday, February 2, according to its Facebook page while the Hamby family updates the 87-year-old restaurant at 613 West Sixth Street in downtown Austin. A reopening date isn’t known, though the restaurant’s Yelp page currently predicts a March 31 reopening; potential changes include updating the dining room and adding new dishes and beer bottles to the menu, and the family asks customers to be patient during this transition. Opened in 1932 by Robert (Coleman) Hamby and his brother Tom as a beer-and-snacks joint and expanded into steaks and fuller entrees during World War II, the restaurant stayed in the Hamby family through successive generations (Coleman’s sons Robert and Tom, then granddaughter Mary Gail Hamby Ray and her son Zachary), added a full bar in 2015, and is particularly known for steaks drenched in lemon-margarine sauce served with giant potato wedges." - Nadia Chaudhury
