"A former Torrance sushi restaurant owner is opening a Japanese fast-casual rice ball restaurant in Downtown LA’s warehouse district. The name is OMSB (shortened from omusubi), and the healthy eatery plans to open by late March or early April. The onigiri (or also known as omusubi) menu is all about making a custom rice ball with a simple approach: start with a choice of organic rice, then pick a marinated protein, wrap it up in seaweed, and choose a side dish. It’s a classic Japanese grab-and-go food from convenience stores. A single ball here costs $4.50, with plenty of vegetarian-friendly options, including lotus root and carrot, sweet and sour tofu, or Indian curry. Seafood selections include some expected items like spicy tuna, and hamachi, along with the spicy red caviar, avocado, and cream cheese. Meat lovers have three picks too, and can pair ball combination plates with side dishes that rotate daily. OMSB will also have a matcha bar, with 14 different flavors. OMSB’s owner is Hide Takeuchi, who used to head Sanuki No Sato, the well-established Torrance restaurant that opened in 1989. A few years ago, Takeuchi sold his Sanuki No Sato shares to create an inspired healthy Japanese restaurant located in an industrial part of Downtown. Takeuchi also poached the former Sanuki manager to help run the business, Yuji Noto." - Mona Holmes
