New York’s Legendary H&H Bagels Is Opening in Chicago | Eater Chicago
"According to Crain’s, the long-running bagel company is opening a Chicago location this summer at 164 N. Peoria Street in Fulton Market as part of an expansion effort announced last year. The company previously said that bagels for new locations would come from a production facility in New York, but that has not been confirmed. Founded in 1972 by Helmer Toro and Hector Hernandez, the brand became woven into the city’s culture, earning references on Seinfeld and Sex and the City. After Toro was indicted in 2010 for tax fraud, grand larceny, falsifying records, and violating labor law, he spent 50 weekends in jail and paid a $500,000 fine; the company filed for bankruptcy and closed its shops. In 2014 a former Wall Street investor, Jay Rushin, bought the company and paved the way for nationwide expansion. The chain opened a California location last month, and currently has locations in New York and D.C.; offerings include bagels, sandwiches, lox, tubes of cream cheese, and more.
