"Closing this Saturday, Yang Market was an Eckington corner store that mixed gourmet groceries and Italian deli sandwiches and even took its name from My Cousin Vinny quotes. Owner Peter Sitcov told me the taxing nature of running the business by himself and the heavy cost of building repairs led to the closure, and that he wants to spend more time with friends and family and pursue other things. He and his wife own the two-story building (they bought it about two years ago from a couple who had run the corner store for 35 years), plan to be selective about a socially conscious renter, and are building a condo on the second floor where they will eventually move in. The Sitcovs kept the market’s original name to serve longtime customers and newcomers, selling everything from canned goods and cheap beer to boutique coffee, charcuterie, and Italian deli sandwiches (Peter opened the deli side in 2017); Washingtonian even ran a headline saying D.C. needs more NYC-style bodegas like this one. Despite renovations, the building still required frequent repairs, and Sitcov said he wished for more support from Ward 5 programs or an endorsement/access to grants; McDuffie’s office says endorsements would be an ethics violation but did meet with him and hand-deliver a pamphlet about small business programs. He told me he’ll be working the line for chef Adam Greenberg at the forthcoming Coconut Club, and he expressed gratitude for the community’s support—"Every sandwich I made and every single beer I sold, it meant a lot..." - Gabe Hiatt
