"I saw screenshots showing Downtown Houston nightclub Spire packed over the weekend despite Gov. Greg Abbott’s order closing bars; the images show massive crowds, little social distancing, and very few face masks. It’s the second time since the pandemic that Cle Group, which operates Spire and Downtown pool club Cle, has obviously flouted rules — earlier Cle hosted a viral Memorial Day pool party — and that apparent defiance angered other Houston bar owners. In a lengthy Instagram post, Heugel accused Spire’s operators of endangering public health and potentially engaging in corruption that could prevent others from reopening, and sommelier Sean Beck called it irresponsible and damaging to the community and industries. Part-owner Bret Hightower told ABC13 the venue is a “reception hall” that makes most of its revenue from ticket sales and that masks were required for staff and patrons, but the weekend photos contradict that claim; city and state inspectors were reportedly out checking bars, though Spire wasn’t inspected." - Amy McCarthy
